I recently watched the horror short, Red Daisy Jane. The tagline is “to be preyed on” and is a good reminder that you never know who can be a predator. The short was directed, produced, and written by Vanessa Matic and Alex Ruiz. It stars Jenn Willens, Vanessa Matic, and Jess Hughes. Cinematography and editing by Alex Ruiz. Remix and stunning artwork by Spencer Peck (Azeal).
This short was well-shot with great lighting and an unnerving atmosphere. From the very beginning, you know something bad is going to happen. Reminds me of the early Craig-list days, when it seemed like there was a new story every day about a crime happening via that site. I never had the guts to check it out, because I figured I’d end up sliced and diced if I did.
But Red Dasiy Jane has big dreams for herself and isn’t able to spot the red flags. Her performance is phenomenal. Innocent, sweet, and very naive. She doesn’t realize how in over her head she is until it’s too late. The other main female character plays a wicked villain and ultimately the perfect predator.
The cinematography, red lighting, and editing helped give Red Daisy Jane a creepy and sinister feel, while still giving a hint of hope. The soundtrack also helped create an unsettling atmosphere that will send shivers down your spine. It left me wanting more, which is always a huge plus!
