Tis the season for jack o’ lanterns, costumes, and Halloween candy galore! Well, for most of us. Some are still waiting for a virgin to light a candle so, they can return to Earth and wreak havoc. Something is definitely brewing in the air because PopHorror is about to let you in on the next Villain of the Week! She’s bad. She’s bold. She will put a spell on you! Let’s give a marvelous introduction to Winifred Sanderson!
THE ROAD TO BECOMING A VILLAIN
Let’s be honest here. Winifred Sanderson was born to be a villain. In the late 1600s, she resided in the outskirts of Salem with her two sisters: Sarah and Mary. They sold their souls to the devil in return for a spell book containing evil and dangerous magic. The book also held the recipe for a youth potion that allowed them to suck the life from children. They indeed want to be forever young. Too bad the town was on to them and their twisted antics. Most notably, the Binx family was out for blood. They demanded to know where their children Thackery and Emily were. If they had been honest, the truth would have been revealed that Emily was dead and Thackery was now an immortal black cat. It didn’t pan out that way, however. The only response they received from the Sanderson sisters was one of sarcasm. Condemned to hang, Winifred lets everyone know they will be back when the moon is full on Halloween night. That is after a virgin lights the black flame candle.
Fast forward to the nineties. A virgin lights the candle. His name is Max Dennison and he has no idea what he has just done. Just like that, Winifred and her sisters have made their return. However, they are at a slight disadvantage. Times have changed so, she is easily outwitted. Winifred has to work that much harder to preserve the youth of herself and her sisters. She goes to great lengths to get what she wants. The world contains a new batch of children to preserve their youth. Magic is the only shot Winifred has. Witchy woman.
CATCH PHRASES
Winifred Sanderson is quite witty. She is such a fun character who we still love to quote to this day. Let’s look back on some of her best catch phrases.
“Oh, look. Another glorious morning. Makes me sick!”
Billy Butcherson: “GO TO HELL!”
Winifred Sanderson: Oh! I’ve been there, thank you. I found it quite lovely.
“Why? Why was I cursed with such idiot sisters!?”
“Pull over! Let me see your driver’s permit!”
“It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus!”
“Unfaithful lover long since dead. Deep asleep in thy wormy bed. Wiggle thy toes, open thine eyes, twist thy fingers toward the sky. Life is sweet, be not shy. On thy feet. So sayeth I!”
“Damn, damn, damn, double damn!”
“What a fool to give us thy life for thy sister’s.”
EPIC KILLS
Emily Binx – It can be assumed that Winifred and her sisters killed several children. The only one we bare witness to is Emily Binx. In the beginning of the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, the Sanderson sisters are shown as old hags. Emily sits quietly in a chair while a massive cauldron brews a special potion. Each sister drinks from the cauldron and proceeds to gather around Emily. Then, they deliberately begin sucking the life out of her. Seconds later, it is revealed they are years younger. Easy, breezy, beautiful cover girls. Sort of.
Billy Butcherson – We do not actually see Winifred kill Billy. We do see her bring him back from the dead, though. He was her lover in the past. Winifred found out he was having an affair with her sister Sarah. A woman scorned, she poisoned him and sewed his mouth shut with a needle. He was forced to keep her secrets even during death. He is quite the looker.
Thank you, Winifred Sanderson, for being such a memorable villain! There was never a dull moment when you appeared on the screen. We are sorry you are in a stone state right now. It’s okay though, because we are certain you will find a way back. That’s what great villains do. Congrats for being PopHorror’s Villain of the Week! Now who is next?
