6). Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
After the original film’s success, it was only natural for them to make a sequel. Writers knew that in order to replicate the first film’s success, they were going to have to do something a little different. What became of that knowledge was equal parts “mockumentary” and intelligent horror.
Book of Shadows did not receive a warm reception. In fact, it was panned by critics and fans alike. I don’t agree with any of them. Had this film been released as something completely separate from the “Blair Witch” franchise, I believe it would have been successful. It was aware of what it was trying to do and, upon finishing, left me thinking about it for weeks.
Unfortunately, fans probably wanted something similar to the original film’s format. Filmmakers would have had a really hard time pulling off the “this entire thing is real footage” a second time. They did, interestingly enough, keep the trend of the character’s and actor’s first names remaining the same. For example, Kim Director’s character is named Kim Diamond and Erica Leerhsen’s (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003) character is named Erica Geerson. So, maybe they were subtly trying to recreate the same shtick, despite the disclaimer at the beginning that states it is a fictional re-enactment.
Either way, I think it was a pretty solid effort that deserved more praise than it received.
You could also make a pretty good case for GINGER SNAPS and THE CELL…
