Right off the bat, I just have to say that I’m a big fan of home invasion films. Home invasion is a very often overlooked sub-genre in horror, but it’s one of the best. There’s just something very real and frightening about someone breaking into your home to harm you. So, when I read the synopsis for Tiger House, which was released on DVD and On Demand on November 3rd, I was immediately intrigued. After I finished watching it, my initial thought was that the film was pretty well done.
Tiger House was the feature film debut of director Thomas Daley, who had only made short films in the past. I’ve got to say, it’s a pretty damn good start. The basic synopsis from IMDb.com is about girl named Kelly (Kaya Scodelario) who sneaks into her boyfriend’s house one night, only to find she’s not the only uninvited guest. A group of thieves break into the house and take her boyfriend and his family hostage with the intent on robbing the stepfather’s workplace. Now, she must figure out a way to escape before they find her, too.
It was a very suspenseful film that didn’t need to rely on blood and gore, focusing on the characters and the tense situation instead. There’s blood but not slasher level blood. Tiger House gave some great performances by Kara Scodelario (Maze Runner trilogy), Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II 2000) as Shane and Ed Skrein (Deadpool 2016) as the underdog turned psychopathic thief.
I wasn’t a big fan of the pacing, however. Tiger House had a very slow start and a very quick ending. Once the action finally starts, it is epic! When it comes to home invasion films, this one doesn’t really bring anything new to the table. I think the characters, the story, and the suspense are what make this successful. This film flew completely under the radar, but if you like suspense thrillers, you should give Tiger House a chance!
