‘The Last Kids on Earth’ (2019) Netflix Animated Series Review

Netflix is known for their great original series, so when I first heard about The Last Kids on Earth, I was totally psyched. This new series is adaptation based on Max Brallier’s best-seller. When I first started the series, it was mostly for my interview with Nick Wolfhard (read my interview – here), who plays Jack, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with this story.

This series was directed by William Lau with animation by Atomic Cartoons. It has an all-star voice-over cast including Nick Wolfhard, Bruce Campbell, Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Charles Demers, Montse Hernandez, Catherine O’Hara, and Garland Whitt.

Synopsis for The Last Kids on Earth

Young teenager Jack Sullivan and a group of friends live in a decked-out tree house, playing video games, eating candy, and fighting zombies in the aftermath of a monster apocalypse.

Personally, I thought this was one of the best animation series I’ve seen in a long time as well as one of my new favorite shows on Netflix. It’s a fun story about friendship, survival, crazy monsters, and more. It’s perfect for the whole family as there is something for everyone.

The Last Kids on Earth

The story reminds me a lot of a more younger, innocent version of Zombieland. It’s hilarious and is all about the rules of survival. However, as expected the rules only help to certain extent, because you never know when a monster may be lurking by…

I think the characters are very relatable whether you connect more to Jack or his friends. I personally connected to Jack most of all. He’s such a fun character. He’s young but wise beyond his years. I guess you have to be when the apocalypse happens. He’s very optimistic despite all the odds against him and a great friend. Nick Wolfhard does a phenomenal job as Jack and think it’s because their personalities mesh so well. Quint is my second favorite because I love his nerdiness. I also love how many talented voice-over actors they got for this, it truly makes this series special.

The Last Kids on Earth

The animation is done by Atomic Cartoons and they did a beautiful job with transferring everything from the book to on screen. The characters are perfect. The visuals are stunning and the details are exceptional. I could watch the series with the sound off and still enjoy it because the animation is done so well that it can tell the story itself. I especially love the details of all the monsters – so many different types and colors!

Final Thoughts

The Last Kids on Earth is a series that is perfect for the whole family. Up until I saw this new Netflix series, I had become quite bored over apocalypse type of settings, but The Last Kids on Earth has restored my love for it. Everything about it is great and I hope there will be more seasons in the future!
