Short Horror Review: Jason Burke’s ‘THE MONSTERS AMONG US’

The Monsters Among Us is a new short horror film by Jason Burke.  Burke, in the fashion of many independent filmmakers, wears many hats in this film – writer, director, lead actor, producer, and likely a dozen other uncredited positions.  The film is centered around a young couple experiencing their first Halloween together when (gulp) things start to go south quickly.

The Monsters Among Us

A little under 9 minutes in length, this film does its best with all the restrictions of a low budget short:  Single location, three total actors, and minimal use of effects, costuming, score, etc.  The film does well to set a ‘things aren’t always as they seem’ scene that wraps up in a satisfying manner.  Likeable characters and creepy lore is a good combination for a successful horror short.  It’s easy to imagine this film improving exponentially with a bigger budget to bolster the effects and sound.

The Monsters Among Us is currently on the festival circuit.  If you see it listed at a festival, be sure to check it out!
