‘SHAUN OF THE DEAD’ (2004) – 20 Years Later

Shaun of the Dead hit in the early 2000s when there was a surge in zombie movies. They were a dime a dozen, and most of them left a sour taste in my mouth. I am a “coming out of the grave” type of person. I hate the idea of a virus spreading. It makes the situation real for me and I love the fantasy: the escape from reality. It is always fun to watch something silly. This was that silly movie. The movie came at a time when we needed it most. The movie provides ups and downs throughout. A lot of it is comedy gold. Shaun of the Dead can go from 0 to 60 in an instant. Shaun of the Dead is turning 20 this year and to celebrate, here’s a retro dive we can all enjoy.

Plot

Shaun, played by Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz 2007), is having a really bad day. Between girl and work troubles, he has nothing to look forward to. Shaun is very routine about how he spends his evening at the same pub. His girlfriend Liz, played by Kate Ashfield (This Little Life 2003) gets tired of his antics and decides to leave him. He is left with his best friend Ed (Nick Frost: Hot Fuzz 2007).  In a moment of clarity, Shaun makes a list and promises to sort his life out after his angry roommate Pete, played by (Peter Sarafinowicz (Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 1999) goes off in a fit of rage.

The next day Shaun is thrown into his morning routine and pays no mind to all the zombies he passes. It turns into a rescue mission for Shaun’s mom and his now ex girlfriend. They arrive at Shaun’s mom’s house, and things get a little serious from here on out.

In the End

Shaun of the Dead will always be one of my favorite movies of all time. I like the ups and downs and I shed a few tears myself at certain points/ For me, that was the biggest attraction to this movie. Watch this movie to find out what I mean.

With a budget of $6.1 million dollars, the box office yielded an impressive (for the time) $38 million dollars. Shaun of the Dead became a hit for horror comedy, and it sits high on its throne.  Some of the best times of my life involved this movie.  It will always bring me a core memory of my 20’s and all the experiences I had. Its a good movie to watch when I feel down and depressed, or just homesick.

The movie attracted the late, great, George A. Romero to the style, and the movie between Simon Pegg and Director Edgar Wright, that they got a zombie guest spot in Land of the Dead. That’s how you know you’ve made it. This movie earned it’s place in the cult classic universe.
