Review of ‘Ghost House’ (2017) – Now Available on VOD!

I’ll admit it. I had not heard or seen much of Ghost House until I was asked if I would like to review it. I am always up for paranormal and ghost stories, so I decided to give it a whirl. The premise is simple. An American couple goes on vacation in a foreign country, thinking it will be the most amazing trip of their lives, and then something goes awry. Should you check this film out? Read on to find out.

Synopsis:

A young couple go on an adventurous vacation to Thailand only to find themselves haunted by a malevolent spirit after naively disrespecting a Ghost House.

Rich Ragsdale’s film stars Scout Taylor-Compton (Halloween 2007) as Julie and James Landry Hébert (Stranger Things TV series) as her soon to be fiancé, Jim. They travel to Thailand for what they believe will be an amazing trip. It starts out well. They visit beautiful Bangkok, where they learn the legend of the miniature ghost houses. These spirits do not haunt the living… at least, according to legend. Jim proposes to Julie and, later that evening, they go out to celebrate their engagement. They hook up with two British guys, Robert (Russell Geoffrey Banks: Who’s Watching Oliver 2017) and Billy (Richard Grey). After a drunken love spat with Jim, she agrees to go with Robert to visit the ghost houses. The trip is no longer amazing at this point, and shit begins to get real. What happens next? You have to watch the film to find out!

Julie visiting mini ghost houses in Ghost House

The performances in Ghost House are solid. Scout Taylor-Compton proves she is definitely a Scream Queen for this generation. James Landry Hebert plays Jim well. He’s irritating, which works for the at times annoying fiancé. The story is formulaic, like most ghost stories. Is that a bad thing? No, not at all. The film is visually stunning. It had some genuine jump and edgy scenes, like a good ghost story should. I also enjoy learning about other cultures, and the folklore associated with that culture, and this film delivers on all of this.

Should you see this film? While in the end, it is up to you, I highly suggest watching Ghost House, especially if you are a fan of paranormal and ghost stories. While the story may seem predictable, it has good performances, stunning visual effects and scenery and creepy moments. The film is available now on your favorite VOD platform.
