God Is A Bullet

Review: Nick Cassavetes’ ‘GOD IS A BULLET’ (2023) – Damn, This Movie is DARK

This probably won’t surprise anyone who knows me, but I’m a bit of a nihilist. I’m not without humor, but I only wear black, let the sound of true crime lull me to sleep, and I’ll never be described as someone who “lights up a room.” But holy crap, even *I* thought that Nick Cassavetes’ (John Q) new film, God is a Bullet, is bleak. But I’d listen to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones – TV Series) read from the phone book, so there was no way I was missing it!

God Is A Bullet

God Is A Bullet Synopsis

Taking matters into his own hands, Detective Bob Hightower tries to infiltrate an evil cult to save his kidnapped daughter and avenge the murder of his wife.

Let’s talk about what works here, and it’s the acting, the acting, the acting. Coster-Waldau is always great: he completes an evolution from a wide-eyed, desperate father to the weathered and cold look of a man with nothing to lose. But the real scene stealer is Maika Monroe (It Follows – 2014), who fully embodies escaped cult member Case inside and out. She’s an absolute revelation.

God Is A Bullet

Let’s talk about what doesn’t work. This film is about a half-hour too long. There is an entire side plot about police corruption that is shoehorned in here because….? It absolutely could have been cut and would have resulted in a cleaner, tighter film. Then there is the tone issue. There is absolutely nothing to break up the never-ending depressing violence. No jokes, no smiles… just more violence. These “cult” members don’t even look like they enjoy themselves at all. So what’s the draw for them then?

These small matters aside, I really loved God is a Bullet. Much like the film 8mm, this isn’t something I’m going to watch every day, but I recommend it to everyone who likes a good thriller and can handle them dark.

God Is A Bullet is available now on digital platforms to rent and own.
