Raymond Wood’s ‘FACELESS AFTER DARK’ (2023) – Review

Faceless After Dark got a little under my skin. I was personally extremely impressed with this and it is a movie you’ll want to watch. I didn’t know what to think about this film at first. It seemed like some dragged-out story about people being chased by a ghost around their studio apartment. However, my mind kicked into high gear and I realized how much I liked this movie.

It is extremely rare for me to find these types of movies. It’s a different take on almost everything we deal with in society today.

Faceless After Dark

Synopsis

Following the success of her last movie, Bowie has difficulty with being an overnight success (Jenna Kannel Terrifier 2016). After her partner leaves on a trip, Bowie is Subjected to something horrifying after a fan tries to copycat a scene in Bowie’s movie. It goes bonkers from that point on. As the night goes on, Bowie has to survive, while she descends into madness herself, who will win the fight?

Raymond Wood (1st summoning (2018) directed the film. from a screenplay by Jenna  Kannel and Tod Jacobs,

My Takeaway

Faceless After Dark goes from 0 to 60 in .5 seconds. There was no real moment that I wasn’t interested in. The story is something I have never seen before and the movie takes you on a roller coaster of uncomfortable scenes. They are not gory by any means, but instead hang you by a thread as you try to figure out who is who. It goes a lot deeper for me. This movie reminds me that modern horror isn’t just hiding in the dark. As the movie goes on, it delivers more anxiety-inducing moments. You almost want the killer to win.

Faceless After Dark is based on current times, flashing back to all the things that have happened in the last few years in society. It doesn’t become an issue for the movie,  just a lot of stuff we are forced to accept. or refuse to take the chance. However, there are some scenes where you ask why no one has killed them yet. As I said before, picking sides in this movie is hard until it gets more intense. You start to ask who you are rooting for. That’s how intense the story is. Something different to delve into your psyche and give you the creeps.

Final Thoughts

The FX in the movie may not be mind-blowing, but the visualization of the moment will start to invade your brain. I enjoy the fact that they made their killings classy. As much as I love movies like Terrifier, I also like movies that highlight final girls. If you are not into blood and guts, this is the movie for you. The blood is even tasteful. They do a great job of making it look presentable and real, the best part is they didn’t use too much CGI, so I respect the crew that much more.

There are some downsides, however. If you have epilepsy this is not the movie for you. The effect as Bowie slips further away is a bit too much. It even made me dizzy. But it’s a minimal issue. I am still a big fan of this movie.

Faceless After Dark is availble to rent and own now on digital platforms.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
