Quiet Places is my first read by Jasper Bark. After reading this tale, this will definitely not be my last read by him. Quiet Places is a delightful mix of folklore and psychological terror, with a gripping story and convincing characters. It is a fable that will leave an impression and make you think long after you read the last sentence.
“A heady mix of folk horror and the psychological, of religious yearning and the uncannily atavistic, this compelling novella carries us through the darkest occult secrets to a cosmic revelation that may haunt your dreams.” – Ramsey CampbellThe people of Dunballan harbor a dark secret. A secret that stalks the dense forests with the Beast of Dunballan. A secret that holds David McCavendish, last in a long line of Lairds, in its unbreakable grip. It is down to Sally, David’s lover, to defy the whole town and free David from the sinister designs of the Beast. To do this, Sally must ally herself with an ancient woodland force and trace Dunballan’s secret back to its bitter origins. Origins which lie not only within the McCavendish family history, but also in a blasphemous heresy that stretches back to the beginning of time, when the world was first born, from within the fabled Quiet Places.Quiet Places is folk horror at its most cosmic and terrifying. Blending folklore with psychological terror, it contains stories within stories, each one of which leads to revelations more fearful than the last. Revelations that build to a soul shattering climax that will haunt you, relentlessly, long after you have put down this book.
