The Haunting of Hill House

PopHorror’s Favorite Horror Shows of 2018

It’s been a great year for horror, including horror TV shows of all kinds. We got everything from angsty, horny teens to badass witches, from creepy pasta stories to ghouls, and from unsolved mysteries to haunted houses. We even got to see the one and only Robert Englund return as Freddy Krueger for a special Halloween episode!

Here are some of favorite horror shows of 2018. Did any of ours make your list?

American Horror Story: Apocalypse

I’ve been a huge fan of American Horror Story since it first aired. Seasons 1 – 3 have always been my favorites, so to see them intertwined in Apocalypse was like a dream come true. It was, hands down, one of the best seasons ever, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Each week, I was aching for Wednesday to come. Seeing the Coven come back and witnessing Michael grow to power was a sight to behold. It will hard to be top this season. – Tori Danielle Romero

CW’s Riverdale

Riverdale

Riverdale is a unique take on the classic Archie comic book characters. But these is not the cartoon characters that everybody knows and loves. The story follows Archie and his friends as they navigate life with a darkness that seeps into their small town. Season 1 focuses on the death of Jason Blossom, while season 2 took on Riverdale’s very own serial killer, The Black Hood. I like the show because it’s dark and filled with mystery. The characters are well-developed with complex, crazy storylines. It is currently in the third season which airs on Wednesday nights at 7/8 pm CST/EST on the CW. – Danielle McKinney

The Goldbergs’ Halloween Episode

Freddy Krueger - Goldbergs Halloween episode

There was even more reason to love the nostalgic show, The Goldbergs, this year with their Halloween special. Horror fans got a real treat with a guest spot of Robert Englund reprising his iconic role as Freddy Krueger! It definitely left us horror fans with quite a tease, and I think I can speak for everyone when I say I think he’s got one more NOES movie left in him. This needs happen, like, yesterday! – Lacy Lou

SyFy’s Channel Zero

Channel Zero

SyFy’s Channel Zero is, without a doubt, one of the best horror shows on television right now. Each of the (so far) 4 seasons focuses on a different popular Creepypasta story, and is some of the most stylish and downright eerie horror on cable. – Matthew Solomon

Netflix’s Ghoul

Ghoul throws out everything you think you know about Indian entertainment and then scares the hell out of you with old school superstition. A ghoul from Arabic folklore takes over an interrogation and turns its captors against each other by exposing all of their secrets. – Devin Shea

Hulu’s Light as a Feather

light as a feather

From the moment I heard about Hulu’s Light as a Feather, I knew I would love it. I love anything to do with witches, and although this show isn’t about witches per se, it is about magic and a group of girls who start dying off after playing a game of Light as a Feather. This instantly took me back to one of my favorite ’90s movies, The Craft. It was fun and intense from beginning to end, and I can’t wait until season 2 comes! – Tori Danielle Romero

Hulu’s Into the Dark

Into the dark

I am enjoying Hulu’s Into the Dark series, with an episode coinciding with a holiday for that particular month. They have been both dark and diverse in horror genres. I eagerly await for the first Friday of the month for the new episode. I absolutely can’t wait for the rest of the season’s episodes next year! – Jennifer Bonges

Hulu’s Castle Rock

If you’re a devotee of Stephen King, then JJ Abrams will blow your mind with this show, and you will get lost in this world that is Castle Rock. – Lacy Lou

Netflix’s Black Mirror

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

Black Mirror is a thriller/science fiction anthology television series from Netflix. Each episode gives a unique but horrific view of the dangers of technology through creative storytelling and imagery. Every season just keeps getting better and better! I am excited to see if they top the magnificent episode from season four called “Black Museum.” I guess I will have to wait for the next season and see! – Stacie Marie

HBO’s Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects was intense and insanely suspenseful while leaving you feeling unsettled and creeped out. It made you want to take a shower after every episode. – Tiffany Blem

Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Horror fans who remember the ’90s tween sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch were surprised this year with a much darker re-envisioning of the show entitled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Derived from Archie Horror, an imprint of Archie Comics, this Netflix instant hit series placed viewers under its spell with deadly witchcraft, pagan rituals, cannibalistic dining and a twisted version of Hogwarts. Horror and mainstream audiences weren’t the only attention Sabrina caught. In a bizarre turn of events, The Satanic Temple filed a legal complaint due to the show’s depiction of the organization’s Baphomet statue. With the lawsuit now settled, Sabrina launched a Christmas special to (yule)tide us over until this new favorite series returns for a second season. – Brandon Long

Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House

One thing I love about dramatic horror is the depth these stories take you into the lives of the characters. This is something The Haunting of Hill House does incredibly well while unraveling a plot with structure seldom seen. This amplifies viewer attachment to each member of the Crain family as they confront lingering memories from haunting events surrounding their old home. With each family member coping in their own way, they struggle to hold onto the strands of their family ties as they experience loss for the second time, which digs up questions from one night long ago but not forgotten. As the series flashes between past and present, truths are revealed in a slow burn of suspense. With carefully crafted plot development, The Haunting of Hill House wraps you up in an array of emotion and takes you on a roller coaster ride full of hopeless despair, dread and panic. With a gut wrenching ending that serves up closure in solemn sadness, this is one series deserving of this year’s horror series honorable recognition. – Brandon Long

Lifetime’s You

How far would you go for love? In the TV series, You, Joe Goldberg (Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley) meets Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail: Once Upon A Time TV series), overanalyzes her clothing and book choices and assumes she’s coming on to him. He becomes the perfect boyfriend, and in his mind, he does what he’s doing is for her own good… keeping tabs on her through her “lost” phone, analyzing her social media, even killing people he thinks have bad intentions toward her. His constant, calm voice over convinces the viewer that what he does really may be what’s best for her, proof of his pure, unadulterated love. Honestly, he really has to love you to kill someone for you. Watching this show makes you wonder what’s going on in the mind of that nice guy that pumps your gas or does your taxes. Based on the book by Caroline Kepnes (which also happens to be my favorite read of 2018), the show is terrifying in its realness and it’s sympathetic antihero. Keep your eyes peeled, though, since season 2 jumps from Lifetime to Netflix. – Tracy Allen
