Nightmares Film Festival 2020 may be finished for the year, but we are still wrapping up some final reviews. I watched the Horror Comedy-A shorts block this year, and there were all gems. Let’s take a look at the films and my thoughts.
Gorgar
Synopsis:
A cautionary tale.
I love this one! A horror themed PSA for Shock The Vote ATX. Sandwiches!!
If you want to see this one, you can watch it here.
The Dancing Kettle
Synopsis:
A mysterious package arrives, shape shifting ensues, and a rescuer is rewarded her kindness.
I wasn’t sure what to expect on this one. A dancing kettle? This short is so intriguing, and I just adore the kettle!
Live Forever
Synopsis:
A musical love letter and tribute to the poor victims in horror films that didn’t make it to the sequel. In an anthemic song, the dead unite across genres and time.
This short made my musical-loving heart happy. A creative short film with a catchy tune! Singing and horror. Does it get any better?
Melted
Synopsis:
A macabre girl laments about the inevitability of death after getting a melting cartoon character popsicle.
I love the creativity of this film. It starts off cute and then it gets dark real fast! Basically, she has a realization that everyone and everything has an end as she’s watching her popsicle melt. It is done in such a way that it will touch your heart.
You may watch it here. You may also read another PopHorror writer’s review of the short here.
Carnivore
Synopsis:
After being exonerated for the cannibalistic murder of his mother, Levi returns to his small hometown to face a community still unconvinced of his innocence.
I usually don’t care for cannibalism in movies, but I definitely enjoyed this one. Great performances and plot.
Make a Wish
Synopsis:
A light-hearted comedy about the sweetest fiancé giving her boyfriend the best birthday present ever.
A perfect blend of comedy and horror.
Everything is Going to Be Fine
Synopsis:
Rock band Stack of Corpses wake up in the woods to discover they have narrowly survived a car crash. Rather than calling for help their petty rivalries get the better of them and they learn creative differences can be killer.
This one was nonstop and engrossing, and I didn’t see that ending coming!
The Virgin Jamie
Synopsis:
A teenage girl is dragged into hunting a serial killer by her best friend on the night of Homecoming.
This made my slasher-loving heart happy. It had the feel of a real ’80s slasher. Definitely one of my top short films!
Meat Lovers
Synopsis:
To satisfy her appetite, a young woman must juggle dealing with her salacious lover and a mysterious pizza order.
This one takes the simple idea of ordering pizza and turns it into a horrific moment really quickly. Simple, creative, and fun!
Misconception
Synopsis:
A husband and wife talk at cross purposes via text messaging, leading to a horrific discovery for one of them.
Even though you kind of know where this film is going, the ending is perfectly creepy humor!
I can say, without a doubt, that each of these films in the Nightmare Film Festival’s Horror Comedy-A are enjoyable. It is hard for me to pick an absolute favorite. They are all unique, many taking simple concepts and making them not only funny but scary as well. If you get a chance to catch any of these films features in the Nightmare Film Festival’s Horror Comedy-A, please do!
