My Favorite Horror Movie – ‘FRIDAY THE 13TH’ (1980)

My favorite horror movie is from 1980 and introduced us all to a person named Jason Voorhees. That’s right, I am talking about the cult classic Friday the 13th.

Friday the 13th premiered on May 9th,1980 and it was produced by Sean S. Cunningham, who also produced Wes Craven’s The Last House on The Left. It stars Adrienne King, Betsy Palmer, and Kevin Bacon. Also making his film debut, Ari Lehman plays the role of Jason.

The plot follows a group of teenagers who are camp counselors who are murdered one by one by an unknown killer while they are trying to open up a camp that has a tragic past. Friday the 13th was a major box office success bringing in $59.8 million worldwide.

Response was divided with some praising the film’s cinematography and score while others derided it for its graphic violence.

I consider it my favorite horror movie because it features a person who I believe has a disability seeking revenge on the counselors who let him die. I think Jason is my favorite slasher because of the way he kills, and even though he may not have been the original killer, the Jason storyline is still very good.

Aside from being the first independent film of its kind to distribute in the U.S. by a major studio, its box office success led to a long series of sequels, a crossover with the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series, and a 2009 reboot. A Crystal Lake television series is currently in development.

Friday the 13th is available to rent and own on digital platforms and is streaming on HBO Max.
