Autumn Road

Movie Review: Riley Cusick’s ‘Autumn Road’ (2021) Delivers A Halloween-Flavored Horror Drama

Autumn Road is a Halloween-flavored horror drama that is perfect for my fellow horror fans who aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to Halloween even though it’s almost December. This follows a young woman who returns to her hometown ten years after her sister vanished while trick-or-treating and becomes wrapped up with two brothers who run a haunted house. Riley Cusick makes his feature directorial debut with Autumn Road and headlines as twins Charlie and Vincent. He is joined onscreen by a cast including Lorelei Linklater (Boyhood, Bomb City), Justin Meeks (Kill Or Be Killed, Butcher Boys), and Lar Park Lincoln (Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood).

Synopsis for Autumn Road

10 years after a young girl goes missing on Halloween night, her grief-ridden sister returns to their hometown to make peace with her unresolved past. Along the way she becomes entangled with two idiosyncratic identical twins from her childhood who now run the town’s roadside haunted house. With nowhere else to go, she is drawn deeper and deeper into their world of scares, secrets, and enchanting house of horrors. While one twin pulls her closer, the other’s threats and scare tactics escalate to a breaking point where he must decide what lines he’s willing to cross. At the same time, her connection with her sister is growing as she starts to unearth new information about who she was and what happened that night all those years ago. The three haunted souls soon find themselves on a melancholic journey for truth set against the backdrop of an approaching Halloween season and the anniversary of her sister’s disappearance.

Riley Cusick’s directorial debut is perfection. Autumn Road delivers a chilling and atmospheric film that will send chills down your spine. The story is mysterious and heartbreaking but you can’t help but feel invested in knowing the truth behind the young girl’s disappearance. It is layered with suspense and drama and horror.

Autumn Road

Lorelei Linklater delivers a ruthlessly brilliant performance. I admired her strength and drive to discover the truth about what happened to her sister. I would have done the same thing for my little sister. Riley Cusick not only excelled as a director but also delivered not one but two amazing performances as twins Charlie and Vincent. These characters are complete opposites but he brings them to life, giving them each unique personas and characteristics. Their character development is also amazing and becomes more disturbing throughout the film.

Autumn Road

The haunting and disturbing cinematography and imagery help set the chilling atmosphere in Autumn Road from beginning to end. The imagery really sold me and made me fall in love with the film. It feels spooky but also cozy at the same time. I love all things Halloween and Autumn and this perfect film for this time of year.

Autumn Road definitely makes my top 15 films of the year. It delivers on all aspects and is the perfect Autumn watch. Gravitas Ventures and The Last Motel’s Autumn Road is now available in North America on a number of digital and cable platforms, including iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, Comcast, Dish, and Shaw.
