Kepler’s Dream (2017) – Beyond Fantasy Review

Here at PopHorror, we do more then just review horror films. We also are honored and privileged to review other kinds of movies, such as Kepler’s Dream, the latest film by director Amy Glazer. Kepler’s Dream is a film adaptation of a book by the same name written by Juliet Bell. So how did the words translate onto the big screen? Let’s discuss!

Official synopsis of Kepler’s Dream:

An 11 year old girl (Isabelle Blake-Thomas) searches for a missing rare book from her grandmother’s (Holland Taylor) library and tries to understand why her family is fractured the way it is, all during a memorable summer at an isolated New Mexico adobe. While her mother (Kelly Lynch), much like astronaut Michael Collins, goes to the dark side of the moon for a leukemia treatment, Ella must journey on her own to the strange moon of her grandmother’s world. Ella’s father (Sean Patrick Flanery) orbits his daughter as Ella befriends Miguel and Rosie to find acceptance of her mother’s fate.

What Works:

What I appreciated so much about Kepler’s Dream was the fact that it took me back to the days of adolescence. It made me remember being a young girl with all the hopes and possibilities in the world, which I believe is rare to do these days. It strives between fantasy and reality. That is really a hard thing to accomplish these days. This is definitely a film that plays on emotions. It is one of those dynamic movies that, even though you know sadness and sorrow is the inevitable, it lets you drift away with the characters into another story line and plays out into a perfect fantasy, all while slapping you in the face with the real world and cutting you to the core of actuality. The acting in Kepler’s Dream is beyond phenomenal. Holland Taylor plays the perfect, ritzy, standoffish grandmother, while Sean Patrick Flanery – handsome as ever – is the perfect choice for a distracted, absentee father. Isabella Blake-Thomas is an amazing heroine and great role model to pre-teen girls.

What Doesn’t Work:

There is a lot of fun and magical mystery to be had with Kepler’s Dream. The only thing I could say was lacking would have to be time in the fantasy land. I understand that, on a budget, you can only do so much, and director Amy Glazer did fantastic with the time frame and what she had to work with. As a fan, I just wanted more of the dream. But that is really just me being picky.

Final Thoughts:

Kepler’s Dream is more then just a fantasy movie. It’s not a film just for kids. Kepler’s Dream translates to audiences of all ages. It may even take you back to the days of yonder, like it did for me. If you are looking for a movie with an amazing story and incredible acting, dream no more and check out Kepler’s Dream as soon as you get the chance.
