Join The Hunt With The ‘Hunt A Killer’ Subscription Box

There’s something about true crime that intrigues people such as myself. I’m not sure why it is. Maybe it’s the mystery itself, but if I wanted mystery, I could easily get that in an Agatha Christie novel. So what is it about crime stories that makes so many people curl up under a cozy blanket in front of their televisions, watching shows about unsolved murders, disappearances and serial killers? I have no idea. I just know I am one of the many who drinks them in like fine wine. So, when I saw there was a subscription box for people like me, I was elated. I was able to bring my love of mystery and my fascination with true crime stories together to play detective with Hunt A Killer.

I want to give a big thank you to Hunt A Killer co-founders Ryan Hogan and Derrick Smith for sending me the first two episodes, giving me the opportunity to explore this unique subscription box and give you lovely readers an honest look at what I thought of it. Hunt A Killer is special. Unlike most subscription boxes where you sign up and it’s done, you have to apply for this box as there are a limited amount of applications accepted. Only 200 per day get accepted into the Hunt A Killer family, and what a treat it is to be accepted. Normally with subscription boxes, I could give you a rundown of what’s in the box, but Hunt A Killer is an exception.

Everyone starts at episode one. No matter if they is are receiving episode six, if they’re new, they get episode one. That way, everyone starts their investigation with the same information and can come to their own informed conclusion at their own pace. Once they start the first episode, each one after that will be chronological.

In the box, in the most basic and spoiler free terms, you get a correspondence letter that gives you clues and communications from your “pen pal” regarding the case. You may also get notes, forms, memos or folders with more clues and codes that you must crack.

In the first box, you receive this amazing and completely recycled notebook and pen to write your thoughts, clues and ciphers in, so you don’t lose any information. You also get this kick ass enamel pin, which immediately went on the collar of my battle jacket. In subsequent boxes, there won’t be the swag that the first box has, but will solely contain clues and more correspondence to aid you in your investigation. Each slick-looking box also includes a note sheet to keep track of what objects were in the package to make sure nothing was missed during processing, and to make sure you have your eye on all the clues.

I immensely enjoyed this box. I love puzzles and, although I may not be as smart as I used to be, the mystery is a bit of a challenge. While no one will know the answer or be able to completely solve the crime until the Season Finale box (each season has 6 episodes), each episode contains another piece of the puzzle to build on the previous box. My advice is to start by recognizing the common theme between the evidence and the boxes. It’s a great starting point and a fantastic way to get your thoughts together… at least, that’s what I did. It is yet to be seen if I’m correct.

You can apply for the Hunt A Killer mystery box here, and when you receive your first package, you will be invited to join the Hunt A Killer social group, where people can post questions, videos and theories about the crime, but beware, because there are others that are farther ahead in the mystery than you are, so there is the possibility of spoilers. Proceed with caution. The subscription is $30 a month plus $3.95 shipping. If you choose to do a six-month subscription, the price drops to $27.50 and the shipping is free! If you choose to do an entire year subscription, the price per box is only $25 plus free shipping. Free shipping only counts for orders in the States, so for international readers, please keep that in mind. Get out of that subscription box rut, because it’s time for all of you lovely people to join the investigation and Hunt A Killer.

About Dev Crowley

D.D. Crowley has been writing since she could scrawl misspelled words on paper to make a story. Thankfully her writing has improved. An avid horror, paranormal, sci-fi and video game lover, she gets to write about all her favorite nerdy fandoms. Some of her favorites are found footage movies, the original 'Halloween' and 'Resident Evil' (the games not the movies, don't ever ask her about the movies... you have been warned).
