As we continue our coverage of the Horror-On-Sea 2023 Film Festival, we had the chance to check out the awesome psychological thriller, Night Caller. It’s a daunting, unnerving piece of cinema that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Night Caller (2021) Synopsis
A telephone psychic finds herself locked in a vicious game of cat and mouse with a serial killer dubbed “The Scalper”, in this harrowing, catch me if you can, murder mystery throwback.
Night Caller (2021) is a dark horror thriller written and directed by Chad Ferrin (The Deep One’s 2020, Pig Killer 2022). It stars Steve Railsback (Barb Wire 1996, Ed Gein 2000), Susan Priver (Bad Detectives 2021, Pig Killer 2022), Bai Ling (The Crow 1994, Crank: High Voltage 2009), and Robert Miano (Donnie Brasco 1997, Fast & Furious 2009).
The film also stars Silvia Spross (Giallo 2009, Pig Killer 2022), Kelli Maroney (Fast Times at Ridgemont High 1982, Chopping Mall 1986), Lew Temple (Walking Dead 2012, Unstoppable 2010), Robert Rhine (The Deep Ones 2020, Pig Killer 2022), James MacPherson (Beneath Loch Ness 2001, Alien Rising 2013), Kristi McHugh (The League of S.T.E.A.M. 2010, Pig Killer 2022), and Scott Vogel (Unspeakable 2000, Attack in LA 2018).
Make The Call
This is a delightful little nod to the psychic crime thrillers of the eighties and nineties. It’s Dressed To Kill (1980) meets Fear (1990) meets In Dreams (1999). It’s sordid, macabre, and eerily atmospheric.
The lighting is fantastic and the music is excellent. The editing could have been a little tighter, in my opinion. I will also say, frankly, the acting isn’t the best and the story and dialogue are a bit messy at times, but despite these shortcomings, it’s still a rousing piece of cinema with plenty of twists and turns to keep you entertained throughout.
One thing that really stuck out, to me, was the gore. Practical effects! While they’re not necessarily the best I’ve ever seen, they definitely added to the excitement of the film. It’s reminiscent of the old midnight movies they’d show on TV back in the day. You know. You were supposed to be fast asleep but you stayed up without your parents’ permission to watch them anyhow.
Final Thoughts
Night Caller is grim, chilling, and unrelenting. It’s brash, brutal, and unsettling. If you’re a fan of grisly, late-night psychic murder mysteries, look no further. This one’s for you. Check this out if you get the chance, it’s a romping good time.
