In life, there are certain fates that are hard for us to accept. The hardest, of course, is losing a loved one. Some never come to terms with that kind of loss. Director and writer Andrea Niada (Here We are Now 2014), brings something new and fresh on this concept with his horror short, Home Education. This might be, by far, my favorite horror short I have ever watched. Let me take you to school and give you a lesson on why you need to watch Home Education!
Official Synopsis of Home Education:
An inquisitive girl is convinced her dead father will soon be resurrected; certain he has died to test their love for him. However, when the corpse begins to rot, the girl is forced to reconsider the situation.
What makes Home Education so fantastic?
Lesson 1: I have never seen a horror short so beautifully shot before. The effects are something not of this world. The ambiance of the score literally gave me chills. This is definitely an atmospheric film that will cut you to your core.
Lesson 2: Niada could not have cast two better lead actresses for Home Education. They both give epic performances with two entirely different dynamics. On one hand, you have the beautiful Jemma Churchill (TV’s Call the Midwife) as Carol, a strong woman who tries to give the best education to her daughter… however, not everything goes as she planned. Carol’s unorthodox methods lead her daughter to take matters into her own hands. Churchill plays it perfectly. Her timing is so striking and believable. On the other hand, we have the beloved Rachel, played by Kate Reed. Reed brings so much depth to her character. She seriously gives the most bone chilling performance of her life. Reed is a new comer to acting, but damn, can she act!
Lesson 3: Home Education is a crazy story with an ending that will leave images stuck in your head forever. It is so bizarre and wonderfully so. I really hope this film gets the recognition it deserves at the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival. The script is seriously phenomenal!
