German Language Thriller ‘TRUNK: LOCKED IN’ Is A Brilliant Study In One Location Terror

A movie with a big budget can, with enough money and effort, thrill you to a certain extent. But it’s so much better when a cracking screenplay, one location, and a talented lead ratchet up the tension right up until the end. And that’s just what viewers get in the new thriller directed by Marc Schießer (Wishlist – TV Series): Trunk: Locked In.

Trunk: Locked In

Synopsis

Malina wakes up disoriented in the trunk of a speeding car and discovers to her horror that she is missing more than her memory. With her mobile phone as the only link to the outside world, she wages a desperate battle for survival.

This film represents (and I’m probably not alone) my worst fear – claustrophobia. So the fact that this actress was willing to fold herself up in the trunk of a car for the ENTIRE film is commendable. Sina Martens (Tatort – TV Series) as Malina is incredible. She can maintain a level head, choking down any moments of panic, and yet none of her acting ever comes off as forced. While there are a few minor characters we see for maybe a few minutes total, it’s Martens who confidently carries the entire film.

Credit for the rapidly accelerating tension of the film must also go to the camera work and lighting. Instead of just parking the camera in one spot, it constantly moves around with Malina. The lighting changes based on where she is, what holes she manages to punch out, and the light bathes over her face: sometimes like a beacon of safety, sometimes menacingly.

Trunk: Locked In is such an impressive film and one of the best thrillers I’ve seen in years. I would not hesitate to recommend this film to anyone.

It’s available now on Prime Video, so please check it out!
