FGBFF (2018) – ‘The Contest’ Horror Short Review

This film intrigued me right from the start with this description: “The Contest is a twisted homage to the wonderful and strange Twin Peaks and cherry pie.” I knew right away that this was one I wanted to watch. The Contest is a female driven dark comedy short that runs at almost eight minutes. Did it live up to the Twin Peaks strangeness? Read on to find out!

The film is directed by Aimee Morgan. She also co-wrote the film along with Edward Nyahay. The film stars Nicholas Downs, Maura Antas, Shaka Folger-Basso, Melissa Jobe and Christopher McGahan.

The Contest Synopsis:

Female-driven horror/dark comedy about an annual cherry pie contest in a small town where one – or more – of the contestants is a murderer.

My Thoughts:

The Contest jumps out of the gates with some straight gore. It was bloody and just made my stomach turn, which is great in a horror movie. It had some great references to Twin Peaks, including David Lynch coffee and finding “Laura’s” necklace in a piece of pie. Betsy Palmer is determined to pour out  heart and finish in the top spot in the 25th annual cherry pie eating contest. Will Allison King, the five time reigning champion, win once again? Will Hank, who is also as determined as hell, land that blue ribbon? Or will Betsy succeed? I don’t give away spoilers. If you get a chance to watch this one, please do. It is a deliciously dark and cleverly made short film. Plus, Twin Peaks!
