‘Family Til’ It Can’t Be, Gang Til’ It Ain’t’ – Book Review

I just read Family Til’ It Can’t Be, Gang Til’ It Ain’t by Chaz Williams, and I think he’s going to be making a name for himself rather quickly. Chaz Williams has a unique voice and style that I already cannot get enough of. He’s creating the genre of urban splatterpunk by drawing from his experience growing up in Chicago. This gets me excited because it is something different that I haven’t seen before. It is truly refreshing to see a new voice in the genre that doesn’t conform to the white, male, loner stereotype. There has always been a lack of diversity in the world of horror fiction, and I am excited to see some new blood and fresh ideas in the genre.

Check out the synopsis:

Real Family are the people we choose, What if you choose wrong?

In The Heart of Chicago four lifelong friends, develop a brotherhood and become family over the shared experience of childhood trauma that one of them went through and survived. From that day forward instead of the street life and joining the deadly Chicago gangs they were a “gang” of four that looked out for each other no matter what.

Now as adults they discover one of their own has been keeping a heinous secret that is threatening to be exposed. The bonds of brotherhood and family will be tested and once and for all they will learn if it’s gang over everything.

Family Til’ It Can’t Be, Gang Til’ It Ain’t is an urban splatterpunk horror novella about friendship, loyalty and deciding if unconditional love has no limits or if every family dynamic has a breaking point.

Chaz Williams is coming in HOT with Family Til’ It Can’t Be, Gang Til’ It Ain’t. This fabulously twisted tale takes us to Chicago, AKA “Chi-raq,” to introduce us to urban splatterpunk, a genre I didn’t even know I needed. But now that I’m aware of it, I definitely need more.

Chaz Williams writes characters and dialogue in a very realistic and relatable way, making even my most HATED character relatable and breaking my heart when I can’t help but hate him. This novella is a quick read, but it packs some brutal punches. And a careful reader will probably catch a great many references and inside jokes, which although they’re not strictly necessary, definitely add to the overall experience. You’re going to want to read this right away because I predict Chaz Williams will be someone to watch in the coming years.
