Why You Need To Read ‘The Warrior Retreat’ by John Lynch – Book Review

I’ve been meaning to read The Warrior Retreat by John Lynch for a long time. Recently a good friend and fellow reviewer told me it was in his top reads for the year, which was just the nudge I needed. I SHOULD NOT HAVE WAITED! This ended up being one of my favorites for the year as well. I slept on this book for way too long. Don’t make the same mistake that I did. Read The Warrior Retreat today.

Synopsis

SOME WOUNDS DON’T HEAL…

For some servicemen and women, coming home means the end of war. But for the Marines of Weapons Company, it’s not so simple. Sometimes, the war follows you home.

After the suicide of a fellow brother in arms, Marine turned veteran advocate, Marcus Simpson, organizes a weekend getaway through a Nonprofit agency.

Marcus has seen too much to allow another brother to become a statistic. He knows that one weekend isn’t enough, but maybe if he can get through to them, he can convince them to seek professional help.

But what happens when a man’s mind has been broken beyond repair?

What happens at…

THE WARRIOR RETREAT

The Warrior Retreat makes brilliant use of one of my favorite horror tropes; the idea of mental illness masquerading as the supernatural. For me, the thought of being unable to trust your own senses is absolutely horrifying. This book offers a frightening insight into the very real horrors of war, as well as the ongoing horror of PTSD, which far too many of our veterans suffer through daily.

This was a stunning debut, and I now understand why it ruffled so many feathers. John Lynch pulled no punches with this tale. It is graphic, violent, and utterly devoid of flowery language. It is told in the straightforward, no-fucks-given parlance of an average marine. If you’re not sensitive or easily offended, there’s a good chance you’ll find this book triggering. The Warrior Retreat managed to both make me nauseous and give me goosebumps, firmly establishing John Lynch as a new favorite author for me.

This book is currently available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook on Amazon. Pick your favorite format and give it a read ASAP.
