Clench Your Rosaries and Say Your Prayers: PopHorror Reviews ‘The Nun’ (2018)

The much anticipated movie The Nun (2018) from The Conjuring universe has taken over box offices this weekend. Finally, answers are being provided on this ominous entity that has been teasing fans of the franchise for years. So, grab your rosaries and brush up on your prayers! Let’s talk about The Nun!

The Nun (2018) is a supernatural horror film that was written by Gary Dauberman (IT 2017) and James Wan (The Conjuring franchise) and directed by The Hallow’s (2015) Corin Hardy. The movie stars Bonnie Aarons (Mulholland Drive, Drag Me to Hell), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight, Alien: Covenant), Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), and Jonas Bloquet (Elle). It is excelling in box offices across the country, and is well on its way to be the franchise’s best opening weekend, projecting to gross over $40 million.

The official synopsis:

A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

The movie centers around Father Burke (Demian Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) being requested by the Vatican to investigate a suicide of a nun in Romania. They are escorted to the site of the death by Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), who was the one that discovered the body. Soon they discover there is something more supernatural and malicious at hand.

The story flows well and at no point is there any lag in the plot. From the initial scenes of The Nun, audiences are inundated with the horrific imagery setting them up for what is ahead for them. Every step of the way, the plot allows for scare and fright. In the end, you are granted the final epiphany, realizing how everything ties together.

The actors provide excellent performances all around, but Taissa Farmiga really steals the show. In the initial scene where her character is introduced, the actress makes us fall in love with Sister Irene. We learn that this nun is strong in her faith, but has a little rebellious side as well, as she is teaching a group of children about dinosaurs. She is a character who is more fearless and much stronger than the male counterparts in the movie.

This movie has been met with criticism by the elitist mentality, just like the other movies in The Conjuring universe. It is a horror movie with a lot of jump scares and a simple plot, but there is nothing wrong with that. There is room for all types of movies in the horror genre, and not every film has to be a deep thinking horror masterpiece like Hereditary (2018).

Final Thoughts

The Nun (2018) provides a satisfying backstory to this haunting character that has been tormenting audiences in The Conjuring franchise for quite a while. The way it was tied into the other movies was brilliant. Additionally, the actors’ performances and the eerie imagery provide for a movie that is worth viewing.
