Cinepocalypse 2017 Presents: ‘Charismata’ – A Disturbing Game of Cat and Mouse

Cinepocalypse 2017 is killing it with their film lineup. I recently watched Charismata, which was shown at the festival on November 4th. This one is a fun psychological horror that will keep you on your toes.

Charismata

Charismata is co-directed and co-written by Andy Collier and Toor Mian. The film stars Sarah Beck Mather, Jamie Satterthwaite, and Andonis Anthony.

Official Synopsis for Charismata:

A rookie female detective, struggling to find acceptance in a police department defined by a culture of bullying and intolerance, watches as things go from bad to worse as her chief suspect in a series of brutal ritualistic murders takes a personal interest in her. A game of cat and mouse degrades the detective’s grasp on reality and, as she spirals out of control, this young woman must suddenly fight for her sanity, life… and maybe even her soul.

This was definitely a crazy tale of cat and mouse. You never really know if things are really happening or if its all in Rebecca’s (Mather) head. It reminded me a lot of the 1995 crime thriller Se7en, but with a crazier ending and satanic elements.

All of the actors in Charismata were great, but Sarah Beck Mather knocked it out of the park with her emotional and strong-willed performance. As her grasp on reality becomes blurry, the audience feels her agony, confusion, and determination to solve this case before she goes completely insane.

The ending threw me off quite a bit. I was not expecting that all and it’s always nice when a film can shock you. I’m still in a bit of bewilderment as to what actually happened.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, Charismata is a fun and disturbing psychological horror that will keep you guessing the whole time. Be sure to check it out when you can!
