Retro Reviews

When I was around 8 or 9, I was scanning the horror section at the video store. The case for Day of the Dead, stood out like a sore thumb for me. I was sold just on the cover art and had to have this. Then I learned there were …

While many regard it as an incoherent entry to the series, Hellraiser: Bloodline is quite the entertaining little gem. On March 8, 2026, this installment turned 30. Previous Hellraiser films focused on the humans, their desires, and their flaws. Hellraiser: Bloodline focuses on the demons, Hell’s rules, and Hell’s history. That …

Anyone who reads my articles regularly knows how I feel about 80’s slashers. Maniac won me over a long time ago, in my childhood, even. Also, most of you also know, I started watching horror movies at way too young an age. It molded me into who I am today. …

SOV director Bret McCormick (The Abomination) was churning out product for VHS rental at a pretty decent clip in the 1990’s. Some of his output is hit-or-miss, and he wore his influences on his sleeve, but for fans of the campy & cheap, but ambitious, this is the stuff! Wildeye’s …

If you aren’t aware of Lucio Fulci, I would take this time to suck in every movie you can. Envelop this genius of early 80’s gore. Folks rally around the “Fulci Lives!” slogan. There is a reason, and House by the Cemetery is one of them. I started on Fulci …

Overlooked and forgotten (sometimes rightfully so) low/no-budget SOV features from filmmakers who either went on to greater things, or flashed out completely. At little over a decade before we were widely exposed to the “beauty is pain” concept by recent offerings like The Substance and The Beauty, Japanese filmmaker Mika Ninagawa (Sakuran) adapted a manga and created a beautiful film called Helter Skelter (no relation to Charles Manson). 88 Films, as part …

It seems like whenever “German splatter” is discussed you hear the name Olaf Ittenbach (Beyond the Limits). Admittedly, I’m only familiar with his work on Bloodrayne. However, with Unearthed Films’ new Blu ray presentation of Garden of Love (aka The Haunting of Rebecca Verlaine; 2003), I was excited to take …

Other than the awesome My Bloody Valentine from 1981 there weren’t a lot of Valentine’s Day-themed horror films back in the day, so I was psyched when I heard that there was a new one coming out called Valentine. I thought it sounded promising, and the teaser trailer was nothing …
