BUFF 2018: ‘Revenge’ – Horror Film Review: Brutally Intense, Ruthlessly Revengeful

I love revenge films. They are often riddled with pain, degrading situations, and intense emotions but there’s always more to it. That is just the beginning. Empowerment is what fuels them. A spark of hope and rage that one can only truly understand if you’ve been put in a situation like this in which you put the law aside and seek justice for yourself. That’s why I couldn’t wait to check out the new horror thriller, Revenge.

I was lucky enough to watch it for the 2018 Boston Underground Film Festival and it blew me away. Find out why.

This exciting horror thriller was directed and written by Coralie Fargeat. The film stars Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Kevin Janssens, Vincent Colombe, and Guillaume Bouchède.

Official Synopsis of Revenge:

Never take your mistress on an annual guys’ getaway, especially one devoted to hunting – a violent lesson for three wealthy married men.

Revenge was everything I had hoped for and more. It delivers a brutally intense story, with bold characters, buckets of blood, and is one hundred percent ruthlessly revengeful. The kind of story that has you yelling at the screen, “that’s my girl, get em’!”

The story starts out fun and exciting. Everyone is having a good time partying it up and enjoying their eye candy, Jen (Lutz). That is until they start looking at her like she’s a sleazy prize they can put their paws on. Messing around with a married man is never a good idea, but she can never foresee that horrible shit that is about to happen. Everything starts to heat up when instead of fixing the problem, they’ll do anything to hush her up including killing her. Unfortunately for them, she’s not easy to kill…

Revenge

Matilda Lutz is mesmerizing and delivers a stunning and badass performance that will stand strong against the many who have come before her. I never knew someone drenched in blood could look so good. I loved her character transformation throughout Revenge. At first, she’s likable, but you don’t want to like her because of the situation. She seems all looks and no brains plus she’s sleeping with a married man. But she proves us wrong, oh so wrong. She had more strength and wit than all three of the men combined. She fought for her life, took dramatic measures, and kicked major fucking ass.

The blood and gore were insane. A gorehounds wet dream. They didn’t hold back at all and I respected that completely. A story like this should be raw, gritty, and brutal… and it was. The effects were realistic and cringeworthy, especially the branch scene. That fall hurt me.

Final Thoughts on Revenge:

This film is outstanding. It takes you on an intense ride through hell and back and doesn’t disappoint. Revenge is coated in blood and will make you feel the need to shower after. Coralie Fargeat blows me away not only as a director but as a writer too, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
