BUFF 2018: ‘BFF Girls’ – Short Film Review

I’ve watched a lot of awesome features and shorts thus far for the 2018 Boston Underground Film Festival. However, one I couldn’t wait to check out was BFF Girls. It’s one that’s been receiving a lot of hype and it’s definitely unique compared to some of the other shorts circulating right now.

Did it deliver the bloody goods? Find out…

This ridiculously wonderful quirky film was directed by Brian Lonano as well co-written by himself and Victoria Cook. It was also produced by the very talented Jill Gevargizian. The cast includes Lea Enslin, Laurence R. Harvey, Dana Snyder, Carolann Utley, Allison Maier, Jessica Shipp, Sydney Allison Thomas, Marilyn Chung, Jessica Nam, Lawrence Sykkmon, and more.

Official Synopsis for BFF Girls:

Three dorky American girls magically transform into beautiful Japanese Superheroes and fight a tampon monster as they begin their journey into womanhood.

BFF girls

This short reminded me of a weird combination mix of The Power Rangers, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Sailor Moon. It was wonderfully bizarre and brilliantly creative.

It’s a story centering around womanhood and getting your first period and how it can change you. I’ve seen several stories about this, but I got to say this one was so creative and fun, it has to be one of my new favorites.

BFF Girls has an awesome cast, but I gotta say the one who stood out to me the most was Fabuloso Doom (Sykkmon). He was hilarious and reminded me of a one of those ridiculous over the top villains from the 90’s. Very nostalgic.

The BFF Girls were also awesome and I loved their nerdiness and quirky girl power. Friends who bleed together, slay together… apparently.

I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that a film about a woman’s blow flow would have some “bloodshed” moments, but this takes it to a whole new level. Blood galore and it’s pretty disgusting. It made me laugh.

Final Thoughts on BFF Girls:

This was such a fun, creative, and ridiculously over the top gem that I think everyone will love. I think it has a very 90’s vibe and many fans will relate to it. Plus, there’s oodles and oodles of blood… period blood that is. What’s not to love? (Laughs)
