THE MORTUARY COLLECTION

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Mortuary Collection’ (2021) Delivers 5 Terrifyingly Twisted Tales!

After giving The Mortuary Collection a second watch (check out our previous review – HERE), I can easily say that this is one of my new favorite anthologies. Written and directed by Ryan Spindell (50 States of Fright TV series, The Babysitter Murders – read our interview with him – HERE), The Mortuary Collection stars Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption, Thor: Ragnarok), Caitlin Custer (Teen Wolf TV series, Swingtown TV series), Christine Kilmer (Hollywood TV series, Shameless TV series), and Jacob Elordi (The Kissing Booth franchise, Euphoria TV series).

THE MORTUARY COLLECTION

Synopsis for The Mortuary Collection

Set in the phantasmagorical town of Raven’s End, nothing is as it seems… In The Mortuary Collection, a misguided young girl takes refuge in a decrepit old mortuary. There she meets Montgomery Dark, an eccentric undertaker with more than a few skeletons in his closet. Montgomery chronicles the strange history of the town through a series of twisted tales, each more terrifying than the last, but the young girl’s world is unhinged when she discovers that the final story…is her own.

What’s great about this anthology is that every story is unique, twisted, and woven together perfectly. Usually, there’s at least one story in an anthology that doesn’t quite hold up to the rest, but that is not the case with The Mortuary Collection. I do have a favorite one, though. It centers around a sorority boy who goes against the wishes of his new sexual partner and finds himself in a world of confusion and trouble. It’s utterly brilliant and probably one of my new favorite short stories/films.

THE MORTUARY COLLECTION

The biggest selling point for this anthology is Clancy Brown as Montgomery Dark. He’s perfect for this type of character. I love everything about his look and style. He reminds me of a mix between Tales From the Crypt’s Crypt Keeper and Phantasm’s Tall Man. A great storyteller with intimidating features.

THE MORTUARY COLLECTION

Sometimes when purchasing a Blu-ray, the bonus features don’t deliver much, but the release for The Mortuary Collection does. Some of the material includes the director’s commentary, extensive behind-the-scene segments, and much more. I loved seeing all the details that went into the making of these stories and the inspiration behind them. I also enjoy deleted scenes and wish a few of the ones in the bonus features had been in the anthology!

Final Thoughts

The Mortuary Collection is now available on VOD, Digital HD, DVD for an SRP of $27.97 and Blu-ray for an SRP of $28.96 from RLJE Films. Grab a copy now! You’re in for a spooky treat. You won’t be disappointed!
