‘All the Creatures Were Stirring’ (2018) Movie Review: Delightfully Horrifying

It’s the most wonderful time of year… brilliant Christmas horror stories just appear out of thin air! I can never get enough holiday horror films. They are full of deranged Christmas spirit, and it fills my hardened heart with joy. So when I heard about the Yuletide horror anthology, All the Creatures Were Stirring, I couldn’t wait to see it.

Was it everything I hoped for? Find out!

All the creatures were stilling

Official Synopsis for All the Creatures Were Stirring:

Ho, ho, no! The joyful spirit of the holidays is about to take one dark turn after another. From sadistic office parties and last-minute shopping nightmares, to vengeful stalkers and immortal demons, there’s plenty out there to keep you from getting out of bed to see what’s under the tree this holiday season.

As I mentioned previously, I’m a big fan of holiday horror films. I have a huge collection of Christmas terrors, and I’m always searching for the next Yuletide massacre. This year alone, I’ve already seen a handful of great ones but nothing can quite compare to All the Creatures Were Stirring. It’s hands down one of the best anthologies I’ve ever seen, and the perfect Christmas present to any horror fan.

What’s better than a fun-filled bloody Christmas horror film? An anthology that has multiple Christmas horror stories, that’s what! It all begins when an awkward date on Christmas Eve leads a couple into a strange theater where they’re treated to a bizarrely frightening collection of Christmas stories. Each tale is uniquely depraved and twisted with original stories, memorable characters, and one common thread… Christmas spirit – or the lack thereof – wrapped neatly in a blood-drenched bow. Like most anthologies, some stories stuck out more than others. There were three that I really loved in this film: “Dash Away All,” “In A Twinkling,” and “All Through The House.”

All of the people involved in the film were great. I especially loved Constance Wu, Morgan Peter Brown, Amanda Fuller, Jonathan Kite, Makeda Declet, Catherine Parker, and Matt Long. They delivered strong, memorable performances that stick out to me the most throughout the anthology. But perhaps, most impressive of all is the director/writer Rebekah McKendry. She recently told Entertainment Weekly about her filming experiencing while 9 months pregnant stating:

“We shot the first two segments while I was nine months pregnant. Then we had to stop because it reached a point where I went a little bit past my due date. My doctor was like, ‘Okay, you have to give birth this Wednesday. We’re making an appointment.’ My first call wasn’t to my parents, it was to my producers, saying, ‘Okay, guys. We can’t shoot next weekend. I have to go give birth.’ We took three weeks off after I gave birth, and then we were right back on, and I brought my son to set with me.”

She’s honestly my new hero, a true inspiration to all filmmakers – especially women – showing that you should never let anything or anyone stop you from creating what you want. And what Rebekah created is something truly magical and something that is sure to become a favorite watch come each holiday season.

Final Thoughts

All the Creatures Were Stirring is the perfect film to watch while cozied up on the couch, drinking hot chocolate, framed by your lit Christmas tree and indulging in some good old fashioned bloody fun. It’s joyfully horrifying and utterly fantastic from start to end. All the Creatures Were Stirring will be On Demand as well as Digital HD and DVD on December 4, 2018 and is the perfecting stocking stuffer so get to stuffing or else!
