‘The Owners’ (2020) Movie Review: Delightfully Twisted

I recently had the privelage of watching a really great film called The Owners. Although it starts out as a robbery gone wrong, the film turns out to be much more twisted and thrilling than one could hope for!

The Owners

The film was directed by The Forest’s (2017) Julius Berg (read our interview with him here) who co-wrote the film with? Matthieu Gompel (The Dream Kids). It ?stars? Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, The New Mutants), ?Sylvester McCoy? (The Hobbit franchise, Doctor Who),? Jake Curran ?(Spotless, Stardust), ?Ian Kenny ?(Solo: A Star Wars Story, Sing Street),? Andrew Ellis ?(Teen Spirit, This Is England),?and Rita Tushingham ?(The Pale Horse, Vera).

Synopsis for The Owners

A group of friends think they found the perfect easy score – an empty house with a safe full of cash. But when the elderly couple that lives there comes home early the tables are suddenly turned. As a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues the would-be thieves are left to fight to save themselves from a nightmare they could never have imagined.

As I mentioned, this film started out like many other run-of-the-mill thrillers, where a robbery goes horribly bad, but this film stepped it up a notch. The Owners was, hands down, one of the best thrillers I’ve ever seen, though. In many ways, this film is comparable to 2016’s Don’t Breathe (read our review here). However, The Owners is much more suspenseful, exciting, and surprising.

All of the acting is phenomenal, but Maisie Williams truly shines and delivers an emotional performance with a side of badassary. Her character is dropped into a situation of unexpected horror, and she does anything and everything to escape.

This film also has a sensational amount of blood and gore throughout its runtime. Much of it is unexpected, which makes it all that much better. The same can be said about the crazy twists and turns throughout the film that left my head spinning.

RLJE Films will release the thriller, The Owners, in theaters, On Demand, and Digital on September 4, 2020. I highly recommend you check it out and see why it’s one of my favorite thrillers!
