PopHorror Let's Get Scared
After tuning in to the real American horror story that was election night, I looked forward to taking a much needed break from reality and tuned in for the pre-season finale of American Horror Story: Roanoke. This is the point in the season that we can kind of gauge where its gonna end. So far, I have been correct about most of my predictions and this episode was no different. I will get to that later. This review will contain spoilers because I honestly don’t know how to do anything else this late in the season.
This episode started out with three young bloggers, lead by Taissa Farmiga (yay!), who are bound and determined to discover the truth behind the original My Roanoke Nightmare. They discover exactly that. They are murdered one by one and it happens rather quickly. It adds to the body count and the suspense, and while initially I felt that story arch was kind of pointless, I kind of enjoyed it.
I’m incredibly interested in the decision-making process of why they chose to have the fan favorites involved in so little of this season. Evan Peters was in maybe two episodes. Taissa Farmiga only got to be in one so far. The season finale is the next episode and they have barely anywhere to go. I hope that stench I smell is the pile of dead bodies in the next episode and not the lingering smell of impending disappointment.
Earlier I mentioned that I had predicted quite a bit that happened and this episode was no exception. At the beginning of Return to Roanoke, they stated that only one would survive. Using my brilliant horror knowledge and expertise, I deduced that it would be Lee. Why? Well, she is only there to prove her innocence, her fake innocence, and if everyone else but her dies, it makes her look all the more guilty. It made sense in the universe they had created. So no, I’m not shocked that she is the one that made it out alive. What I am shocked by is that they decided to kill everyone off a week before the finale and they chose her to do it. It is like they want her to be condemned.
Remember American Horror Story: Freakshow and how it got mixed reviews? Even the ones who enjoyed it felt it was highly anticlimactic. I enjoyed Freakshow for the characters that they had us fall in love with. Well, I am praying we don’t end up feeling the same way after next week’s episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke because a Dateline-esque interview with Lee and season 2’s Lana Winters doesn’t sound very interesting at all. However, I will not question Ryan Murphy any more this season. He has not disappointed me yet and has surprised me more than once with Roanoke.
