As I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Jessica Lange is returning to American Horror Story and fans are freaking out! This is the moment most of us have been waiting for ever since she left after season 4.
It’s the best news ever!!!
For me, when Jessica Lange left the show, I think she took something with her, and it’s never been the same. I’m not saying that the previous seasons were bad, just that they were just missing her intoxicating and demanding presence. There’s just no one like her, and each character she played in the first four seasons were iconic, the real heart and soul of the show.
That being said, American Horror Story: Apocalypse is sure to be the best season in a long time, and I predict that the ratings will go up immensely… at least for the first two episodes. We still have to wait awhile until we can watch it, though, so until then, I thought it would be fun to rank her previous characters. Let me know if you agree or which ones you would switch around!
4. Elsa Mars in Freak Show
In American Horror Story: Freak Show, Jessica Lange plays Elsa Mars, owner and director of the freak show, but she also loves the spotlight and singing. She is wicked like many of her previous characters, and she struggles with the loss of her youth, beauty, and desire for fame. For me, this season had its moments but kind of dragged on, and the same can be said about her character. Elsa was interesting at first, but eventually, her story became old and repetitive. Plus, all the singing was a bit much.
3. Sister Jude in Asylum
Sister Jude in American Horror Story: Asylum was such a mystery. At first, she seems like a judgmental bitch who looks down upon everyone and ignores her own sins. Jessica Lange plays her beautifully with so much strength, determination, and ruthlessness. I loved seeing her transformation as everything around her started to go up in flames and her past came back to haunt her.
2. Constance Langdon in Murder House
I’ve always been a fan of Jessica Lange, but American Horror Story: Murder House was her comeback. Constance Langdon is a classic southern woman who believes her family is everything. She will do anything for them, no matter how dirty the deed. Her past continues to unfold throughout the season, making everything more interesting and diabolic. She was one of the best parts of the show and the reason my love for American Horror Story began. Well, ya know, besides Tate.
1. Fiona Goode in Coven
Fiona Goode in American Horror Story: Coven makes my number favorite character of Jessica Lange. Why? Well, after all, she is the Supreme. Seriously, this role fit her like a glove. She is a queen, and when she walks into a room, all eyes are on her. No one else could have played this part as well as she did, and even during her weakest moments, she still had more wit and power in her left pinkie than most will ever have in their lives. Beyond this, I just loved Coven and I’m all about #witchpower. It wasn’t the greatest season of the bunch, but it was, no doubt, one of her best characters ever.
