PopHorror Let's Get Scared
Spider One and Krsy Fox (read our interviews with them HERE and HERE) are back with another horror film and I have to say, I think this one is their best yet. Written and directed by Spider One (Little Bites; frontman of Powerman 5000) and starring Krsy (Little Bites) and Brandon Scott (Dead to Me), Big Baby is a bloody and violent slasher that’s also witty and a little bit funny. Who knew that a killer in a giant onesie and baby mask could be so terrifying?
Successful horror screenwriter Adam struggles for inspiration until a terrifying nightmare about a masked killer sparks an idea for his new script. As he delves deeper into the story, the line between reality and fiction begins to blur.
PopHorror: I loved Big Baby so much so I’m super excited to talk to you about it today.
Brandon Scott: It’s fun, it’s a fun, fun movie, right?
PopHorror: It is! What intrigued you about the script and made you want to be a part of the project?
Brandon Scott: What’s interesting is Barbara Crampton, I did a show called Channel Zero with her – fourth season – and we became good friends on that. And one day, she sent me an email and said, “Hey, my friends Spider One and Krsy are looking for an actor for this script they have,” and I read it, and immediately related to the struggling artist who is struggling with creating, struggling with vulnerability around people tearing their work apart, and also I loved just that aspect of it but also where the character got to go in terms of psychological and his relationship with his girlfriend and the script, I just devoured it and loved it. Those were the things that attracted me to it because also I come off of playing a lot of very friendly, very nice guys, and I feel like some of those things would work well for this but also I was excited to explore all of the other elements of Adam that I as an actor I’m like, oohh this is going to be fun to play.
PopHorror: I saw Off Campus, I know.
Brandon Scott: You saw Off Campus? Hey, and I love those roles. I’m like, let’s do it all! Could you imagine him doing what Adam does? Daveed kind of descending into that area? That would be interesting!
PopHorror: You mentioned being a struggling artist and getting torn apart, and one of my favorite scenes is when Adam sees the two podcasters in the coffee shop and he walks up to them. He’s like, “Here’s the thing… “ That was the best!
Brandon Scott: So satisfying! And what’s cool is every screening we’ve been to, people clap at that moment, and so folks must relate to it in some way if everyone’s clapping during that moment.
PopHorror: That’s so awesome! Your character is essentially puppeteering the kills as he writes them. What was it like playing a protagonist who is simultaneously the victim and in a way, the architect of the horror?
Brandon Scott: Yeah, I love that aspect of it because I think that grappling with Adam justifying why he’s doing it, I do believe it’s to save Kate. But then also there’s a mania that comes to him because I think that there’s a part of him that is related to him being this big baby who also is a bit narcissistic who wants his creations to succeed that probably falls too easily into the comfort of the kills and a kind of nonchalance with accepting that he too is a murderer. Hopefully we’re not giving away too much because I think it’s really poignant when Catherine Corcoran’s character is in the pool and she tries to stop him and she says, “You’ll just be a killer too!” We were playing with the way in which Adam’s like, “Sorry.” It’s interesting because I think at that point he kind of accepts that to save Kate but also to finish the story, he has to kill and that is the main objective. I was reading The Dark Tower by Stephen King around this time and hopefully it’s not giving away too much for anyone who wants to read those, but it’s really interesting how he plays with the author and the characters coming to life, and the consequences that come with creativity. Where does it come from, what happens when you birth these characters, and what happens when we kill these characters, too? I’ve always found that, as a creative, an interesting thing because you know that they’re not real but a part of them becomes real to you. It was just fun to play with all that with Adam and again, another reason why I loved this script so much.
PopHorror: You said that he wants his creations to be successful and I think all creators want what they’re making to be successful so he’s doing what he has to to make that happen, while simultaneously saving the love of his life.
Brandon Scott: Yeah, and it’s kind of similar to “be careful what you wish for.” I love when you can distill it down. He’s like, I want my work to be great and all these things, and then at the end of the movie, the podcasters are like, “I fucking love this movie!” He had to do a lot to get there and what he sacrificed…
PopHorror: The visual of the Big Baby is so creepy. What was your initial reaction when you walked on set and saw the killer in full wardrobe for the first time?
Brandon Scott: Adam [Marcinowski], who plays Big Baby, he’s a big guy. He’s a really big guy. The first time I met him, he’s just the sweetest, nicest guy, and I’m like, this guy is so lovely. But then when he would put on the mask and just move around in it, he really is an amazing actor. I think one of the first scenes I shot with him was the one where I sit up in bed and he’s just there next to me, and it’s one of my favorite ones because Adam brought so much to it more than just the mask. It was his whole presence, his whole energy when he would put on that mask and the Big Baby outfit that it would just… I was like, oh we’re here, we’re here. It’s an unsettling presence.
PopHorror: I have just one last question for you today. What is your favorite scary movie?
Brandon Scott: Oh, you’re going to make me choose one? Can I give you two?
PopHorror: Yes, of course.
Brandon Scott: It goes back and forth; it depends on each day. The Shining, definitely, and then another one that I really love is The VVitch. I would put The Shining at the top but I always say The VVitch is one of my favorite horror movies also. What are yours?
PopHorror: My top one is Texas Chain Saw Massacre but I also love The Mutilator from the 80s.
Brandon Scott: I haven’t seen that.
PopHorror: But I also have a soft spot for 90s teen slashers like Scream, Urban Legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Brandon Scott: Yes! They brought a level of fun to the horror genre and made it accessible for a lot of people. I totally get that and those are some of my favorite ones where there’s a bit of fun to it as well as a bit of camp to the horror. All of the above.
