The Age Old Question: Slashers Or Elevated Horror?

I know everyone has their own opinions, and this isn’t really bagging on either style. I may not like elevated horror at all, like 0 percent; however, that’s just my taste. Some people enjoy the dramatic look at reality. For me, that just doesn’t work. I will always choose slashers, and ghouls, and zombies, and some real crappy movies, or so everyone calls them that.

A Legacy

In my thirty-six years deep into the horror genre, and I don’t really like the direction it’s headed. I guess anything new kind of deters people who have certain tastes. For example, my wife is all about true crime and artsy movies. Me? Don’t worry about me, I know where I stand as a slasher fan. I use horror films for pure enjoyment. If I am having a crappy day, the last thing I would watch is some girl humping a scarecrow. It goes nowhere for me, and I have obviously given them at least one watch, and they all disappointed me.

I know most people really dislike my movie taste because there’s really no story lines, or it’s the usual visit to some uncle’s cabin or camping, waiting for Winnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse come running out of the bushes with killer intent, maybe even an Art the Clown guest spot, just have him lie wave or something and I will be satsifed. We can say, however, that 825 Forest Rd. I was really impressed, so there is one out there in a positive view for me somewhere. At least give me a little more horror and less artsy nonsense. Idon’t want to see porn stars running from an old lady. I will give it to The Woman In The Yard; that one really messed me up. I was terrified of the woman, and she didn’t even do anything, but it did get one watch like all the others.

You don’t always follow the crowd. I didn’t enjoy the Walking Dead series. I love the video games, but i cant talk because I still believe in The Simpsons for season two hundred! To me, elevated horror isn’t exactly a bad thing; I just happen to loathe it personally. I am sure there are hundreds or even millions that don’t agree with me, and that’s ok too. Freedom means freedom of choice,

In The End

In the end, it’s like a Mr. Rogers catch phrase: “Hello Neighbor.” Stop being jerks and let’s just let people enjoy what they want. Some want movies about demons in a three-thousand-dollar apartment chasing people around. Sometimes horror fans can be jerks, too. We see it a lot in bad reviews or venting about their poor experience on social media. One day it may be sunshine and rainbows, but not all the time. I have been through bad movie after bad movie and so on.

We aren’t just horror movie fans; it’s an entire community. We get some elitist morons in the process, but you can just grin and bear it. However, they explode on social media with a three-paragraph temper tantrum. I try to stay positive in the community, even if we have different tastes. It’s all good, let’s just be horror fans.

About Craig Lucas

I hail from rural PA where there isn't much to do except fixate on something. Horror was, and still is my fixation. I have 35 years of horror experience under my belt, I love the horror community and it loves me.
