PopHorror Let's Get Scared
I’m really not a fan of most holidays, excluding Halloween. What I am a big fan is holiday themed horror films, especially ones with a comedic bent, which means Easter Bloody Easter is right up my alley. Did Easter Bloody Easter satisfy my holiday horror itch for blood and laughs? Absolutely!
Synopsis
When a bloodthirsty Jackalope starts a fluffy murder-spree at Easter time, a Texas housewife fights to the death to save her husband and discover the creature’s true identity before her town is destroyed forever.
Easter Bloody Easter was directed by Diane Foster from a script written by Allison Lobel. The film stars Diane Foster (Verotika), Kelly Grant (SARS-29), Allison Lobel (Paralysis), Zuri Starks (Rustin), D’Andre Noiré (Sammy Slick: Vampire Slayer), Zachary Kanner, Miles Cooper (The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus) and Gavin Lee (The Orville).

Easter Bloody Easter is the type of horror film that I absolute love: Flawed yet likable heroes, a sense of humor and enough blood to satisfy the gorehound in me. Easter Bloody Easter gives us an extremely flawed but likable hero in Diane Foster’s Jeannie Cooper. She’s an alcoholic whose marriage has hit a rough patch and her husband goes missing, then after “animal ” styled murders start, her husbands blood soaked truck is found. Jeannie teams up with her best friend Carol, played by Kelly Grant, to try to find her husband as well as find out who or what is behind the murders.
Jeanie Cooper and Carol are the heart and soul of the movie. They feel like they have been friends forever and they share a strong bond. Diane Foster and Kelly Grant give excellent performances and make the friendship feel real and believable. The banter between the two is extremely funny and feels a lot like how my friends and I would talk together. Though I don’t know Diane Foster, I have to say I am extremely proud of her for not only delivering a hilarious and badass performance, but also for directing such an entertaining film.
Another standout performance is Allison Lobel as Mary Lou, the town’s Queen Bee, who is one of those characters you kinda love to hate but she’s so damn funny. Allison Lobel was also the writer of the film and I applaud her on that. She wrote some great characters and dialogue.
Easter Bloody Easter features a mystery component as well. It’s left a mystery for most of the running time as to who the Jackalope actually is and the answer definitely comes as a shock. I really like that when the Jackalope is finally seen in full, its a practical suit and it actually looked pretty freaking cool. Not only did we get a practical Jackalope, but he has the power to control an army of killer rabbits, which are also practical. They are equal parts scary, fun and adorable. The kills in the film are mostly played for humor, but there are one of two that will tug at your heartstrings and they didn’t take the easy way out and resort to CG blood.
Final Thoughts
Easter Bloody Easter is an Easter Horror Cult Classic in the making. It features a likable cast of characters, great performances, a hilarious script and some well executed kills and beasties. This is definitely a film I will be adding to my Blu-Ray collection. Highly recommended.
