Although I’ve never read Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, I Know What You Did Last Summer, I love all of the films, especially the original. So, when I heard about Amazon’s new original series, I wasn’t sure what to think. However, after just one episode I was hooked. I Know What You Did Last Summer was written and executive produced by Sara Goodman. The series stars Madison Iseman, Bill Heck, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck, and Brooke Bloom. I Know What You Did Last Summer was produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Goodman writes and executive produces alongside Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, Erik Feig, Peter Guber, Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett, Craig William Macneill, and Shay Hatten.
Synopsis for I Know What You Did Last Summer
One year after the fatal car accident that haunted their graduation night, a group of teenagers find themselves bound together by a dark secret and stalked by a brutal killer. As they try to piece together who’s after them, they reveal the dark side of their seemingly perfect town—and themselves. Everyone is hiding something, and uncovering the wrong secret could be deadly.
To be completely transparent, I have no clue how much closer this series is to the 1973 novel, but it’s very different from the original film. Now, the synopsis is pretty generic and makes them seem similar, but beyond a fatal car accident and being stalked by a brutal killer, there are very few similarities. However, this is a good thing. Why would we want the exact same recreation that the original and other films gave us? That would be boring and unnecessary. This series delivers a fresh, modern take on I Know What You Did Last Summer, and fans of horror, especially teen slashers, are going to love it. And although this series is different, it does have some special homages to the original movie throughout it that fans will appreciate.
The stars of the original film will always hold a special place in my heart, but Amazon brought on some great and diverse talent for this series. Madison Iseman is the star of the series and they couldn’t have picked a better actress. I love all of her work and her performance in I Know What You Did Last Summer is exceptional. All of the other characters and performances are great as well and you can feel their chemistry but also can feel the tension between everyone because they all have a secret and they can’t trust anyone.
Without any spoilers, this series has endless twists and turns and I’m living for it. You never know what’s going to happen next or who will die next. One of the best things about I Know What You Did Last Summer is the awesome and creative kills. That is one thing the original film kind of lacked in and this series doesn’t hold back. This isn’t a PG-13. The kills are brutal, bloody, and over the top in the best way possible.
This is the type of series that’ll you want to binge on. I was impressed with the story, character development, all the twists and turns, and I can’t wait for others to check it out. I Know What You Did Last Summer premieres on Amazon Prime Video on October 15, 2021, just in time for Halloween!
