Movie Review: Netflix’s ‘No One Gets Out Alive’ (2021) is Brutal and Terrifyingly Awesome

Netflix is having a killer year with horror films and this includes their new release, No One Gets Out Alive. The film was directed by Santiago Menghini and co-written by Jon Croker and Fernanda Coppel. It is based on the novel, No One Gets Out Alive by Adam Nevill. The cast includes Cristina Rodlo and Marc Menchaca. The story is a classic haunted house film with several twists and turns and also taps into ancient Mayan Mythology.

Synopsis for No One Gets Out Alive

Ambar (Cristina Rodlo) is an immigrant in search of the American dream, but when she’s forced to take a room in a boarding house, she finds herself in a nightmare she can’t escape.

The film starts out pretty slow and takes its time building up the story. We meet Ambar, an immigrant who is in search of the American Dream. Although it’s not ideal, she finds degrading and unsatisfying work that will help pay the bills and finds shelter in a boarding room. The boarding room is shared by a few others and the owner seems reasonable until things become increasingly weird and she discovers the horrifying truth behind the bearing house.

Honestly from the moment Ambar sets foot in the boarding house, I could sense something truly sinister and I wanted to scream “get out of there while you can!” Although she has hope and tries to remain positive, all you can feel is the dread and doom weighing down everything. You know something truly horrifying is about to happen and it does. It’s not until the middle-end when things start to really pick up and you’re at the edge of your seat, peeking through the gaps in your fingers.

Cristina Rodlo gives an emotionally powered and riveting performance as Ambar. You can feel her strength throughout the film even when she faces a nightmare, unlike anything we’ve seen before. One of the scariest things ever to come from folklore. Marc Menchaca is equally fantastic and delivers his role perfectly.

Beyond the performances, what impressed me the most was the phenomenal special effects towards the end blew my mind. It was amazing, detailed, and something truly out of a nightmare. However, that’s all I can really say without giving any spoilers away. There are also some pretty heavy blood and gore scenes that I think horror hounds will find delectable.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from No One Gets Out Alive, but the ending makes it all worth it. It is now streaming on Netflix, so be sure to check it out and let us know what you think!
