I had the opportunity recently to watch Tricia Lee’s short film, Meeting Mommy. This film has been selected as a semi-finalist for the 13th Annual NBCU Short Film Festival and screened at this festival this past week. The film is one of 15 that was chosen from more than 3,400 submissions. The semi-finalists feature stories about people of ethnically diverse backgrounds, the LGBTQ community and women. Meeting Mommy has premiered at both The Reel World Film Festival in Toronto and an The Asians On Film Festival in LA. Previously we spoke with her, you may read our interview here. We also reviewed her film Blood Hunters which you may read here. Let’s find out more about this short film and my thoughts on this film
According to Karen Horne, SVP programming talent development & inclusion at NBC Entertainment:
In a time where female storytellers are powerfully calling on the industry for more opportunities and recognition, it is fitting that our Short Film Festival has set a new record for female writers and directors represented in our semifinal shorts. I’m proud that our festival not only puts more female storytellers into the spotlight but also features an array of impactful shorts about diverse people.

Co-writer Tina Jung also gives a heartrending performance in the short, and has also had roles on Kim’s Convenience, Jigsaw and Carter. The film introduces the young, talented and captivating Rebecca Chan. who won a YEAA award for her performance in this piece.
Tricia’s most recent feature, Blood Hunters, was screened at the Frontieres Goes To Cannes Marche Screening and debuted at Horror Channel’s Frightfest in London. Affection, another of Lee’s recent films, stars Steve Lund (Bitten, Reign) and Steph Song (Blood and Water, Smallville) in a raw, heartfelt adult drama. The film debuted at the Oscar-Qualifying LA Shorts International Film Festival. Her script, Okay Annex, was selected for the Hollyshorts Screenplay Competition, while her feature script, Spoken, was a selection in the Stowe Story Labs.
My Thoughts on Meeting Mommy:
This film is beautiful. Just beautiful. It touched my soul, and yes, I cried. It is a moving and heartbreaking and poignant film. I figured out why Zoe only gets to see her mother once a year, but in no way was I prepared for the plot that unraveled. The father and daughter relationship was spot on. I could relate to the mother and her selflessness, as all mothers should be. The young performer, Rebecca Chan, is perfect. Each performance is solid and believable. The message is strong, and Meeting Mommy is a must see. I loved this film! If you have a chance to see it, be sure you do. You will not regret it.
