The Curse of Buckout Road

‘The Curse of Buckout Road’ (2019) Movie Review

I love stories about modern mythologies and urban legends because even if you don’t believe in them, there’s still always some truth to the story. That being said, after seeing the trailer for The Curse of Buckout Road, I couldn’t wait to check it out and learn more about the mystery behind Buckout Road.

The Curse of Buckout Road is written and directed by Matthew Currie Holmes. The film stars Evan Ross (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Henry Czerny (Ready or Not, Mission: Impossible), Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Wynonna Earp, Avengers: Age Of Ultron), Colm Feore (The Prodigy, Thor), and Danny Glover (the Lethal Weapon series, Jumanji II: The Next Level).

Synopsis for The Curse of Buckout Road

Buckout Road might be known as the most haunted road in New York State, but nobody really believed it… until now. A college class project on modern mythology turns deadly when a trio of students and an on-leave soldier discovers a series of horrific urban legends surrounding Buckout Road may actually be true. The deeper they dig into the road’s dark history, the more dangerous their quest becomes.

From witches burning at the stake, to backwoods albino killers to a modern, unstoppable stalker, writer/director and horror-film aficionado Matthew Currie Holmes leaves no genre unexploited in this loving throwback to late-80’s midnight movies.

I really enjoyed this spooky urban legend story. It reminded me a bit of The Blair Witch, in the sense that a group of college students film a project about Buckout Road and in doing so become cursed themselves. It’s a fun ride with some unexpected twists and turns along the way.

One thing that really stood out to me about this film is that Buckout Road had multiple different legends. Several “alleged” tragic incidents happened and they all kind of conspire together to bring down anyone who dare trespass on the road. From witches to albino killers, and a pregnant woman screaming for her life… Buckout Road has it all.

All of the performances were good but I really loved the chemistry between Aaron (Evan Ross) and Cleo (Dominique Provost-Chalkley). Although they didn’t know each other well, they understood one another and felt the need to protect each other.

As expected, Danny Glover delivers a phenomenal performance and I would love to see him do more horror films in the future. Henry Czerny plays the perfect bad guy. There’s just something about his gestures and body tone that makes him seem like he’s never up to anything good even when he’s trying to be sincere.

As previously mentioned, there are some twists and turns at the end that I didn’t expect at all but they tie everything together nicely in a bloody, messy bow. Beyond this, I really enjoyed the cinematography, special effects, and visuals for this film, especially when doing flashbacks for certain time periods.

Final Thoughts

I think this is the perfect horror thriller to watch as we tiptoe closer to Halloween. Ideally in a pitch-black room with only a slight glow from the television. The Curse of Buckout Road lands in cinemas and on VOD nationwide September 27 and I highly recommend checking it out.
