Today marks the beginning of Nightmares Film Festival 2020 and man you can tell a lot of work and consideration went into this virtual festival. NFF always delivers the best, but I think they have truly outdone themselves this year. I chose to watch Meander as my first film at the festival and wasn’t disappointed.
The film was directed and written by Mathieu Turi (Hostile) and stars Gaia Weiss (Vikings) and Peter Franzén (The Gunman).
Synopsis for Meander
After getting a car ride from an unknown man, Lisa wakes up in a tube. On her arm is strapped a bracelet with a countdown. She quickly understands that every 8 minutes, fire burns an occupied section. She has no choice but to crawl into safe sections to survive. To know why she’s there and how to get out, Lisa will have to face the memories of her dead daughter…
I’m a fan of director Mathieu Turi’s work and the same goes for this film. As per usual, this story is shocking, brutal, and full of twists and turns that will leave you going what the fuck. The quality of Meander is phenomenal and the performances were exceptional.
Gaia Weiss was the highlight of the film, delivering an emotionally-powerful performance that will shake you to your core. Despite her character going through hell, she was strong, driven, and resourceful. It’s not every day you’re thrown into a mysterious tunnel with no hope for escape, but she handled with more courage and tranquility than most would.
My other favorite part of the film was the overall style from the cinematography to lighting to the wardrobe. It’s very sci-fi. It almost feels like the characters are starring in their own personal video game and the goal is to escape from this neverending, nightmare-fueled tunnel. I also thought the special effects were exceptional and fitting for this type of film.
Final Thoughts
This is the type of film that I would need to watch a few times to make sure I caught everything that was going on and I definitely plan on doing so. Meander was intense, captivating, and emotionally driven with exceptional performances and beautiful cinematography. I highly recommend checking it out as well as everything else Nightmares Film Festival has to offer!
