Movie Review: SyFy’s Brilliantly Bloody ‘Slumber Party Massacre (2021)

As soon as I watched the trailer for SyFy’s upcoming Slumber Party Massacre (2021) reboot, I couldn’t wait to check it out. As my writer previously stated, “Why are we so excited? Because of this brilliantly bloody, batshit teaser trailer they released! Holy crap! It’s got just about everything you could ever hope for in a tongue-in-cheek slasher reboot. Blood. Guts. Laughs. Seriously. You’ll be grinning ear to ear!” And he wasn’t wrong at all… it was all that and more! The film was directed by Danishka Esterhazy (The Banana Splits Movie, read our review here). It stars Hannah Gonera, Frances Sholto-Douglas, Mila Rayne, Alex McGregor, Reze-Tiana Wessels, and Michael Lawrence Potter.

Synopsis for Slumber Party Massacre (2021)

A new contemporary twist-filled reimagining of the 1982 slasher cult classic just in time for Halloween. A slumber party turns into a bloodbath, as a psychotic serial killer wielding a power drill disrupts the fun.

The only time I’m ever really hesitant about a slasher film is when it’s a reboot or remake. Mostly because I like to see something fresh and fun and Slumber Party Massacre was definitely that and more. It’s a modern slasher with girl power written all over it. Some scenes are very over the top but in the best way possible and even when it gets a little too cheesy, the epic kills make up for it! For me, this film is a mix-up of Friday the 13th meets I Spit On Your Grave. And maybe you’ll feel the same. One of my favorite parts about Slumber Party Massacre is that it kind of switches up the stereotypical formula for these types of films. Often in slashers or horror stories, we see a naked woman in a shower right before they get murdered and other scenes like that. This time it’s the other way around. That’s all I’ll say about that, so you’ll have to check it out to see what I mean.

Slumber Party Massacre

All of the performances from beginning to end are great. There’s some tongue-in-cheek, raunchy dialogue throughout the film but it just adds to the quirky atmosphere. I love the chemistry between the girls (women). You can tell they all of a great bond and trust one another deeply. We don’t know much about it but you can tell their type of friendship in which they would do anything for one another. Or at least we think so… and we’re about to find out! My favorite character is probably Hannah Gonera’s character, Dana. She’s a great actress and she delivers a strong performance, making her character shine bright among the horror and darkness.

The kills are pretty awesome especially because the main weapon is a drill – the possibilities are endless with it and creative kills are the best. It doesn’t take long before things get messy, bloody, and gory, but you’ll love every minute of it. There’s also a lot of twists and turns throughout Slumber Party Massacre that may or may not surprise you but either way, you’ll appreciate them!

Slumber Party Massacre‘s SYFY premiere is set to air on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. If you love slashers for both the laughs and the kills, you will love this one! Be sure to check it out!
