I confess that I am a little bit late to the H.P. Lovecraft show. I’ve certainly watched horror films that were based on his work, but I have only recently started reading his writing. With that in mind, I was very excited to review Chad Ferrin’s new film H.P. Lovecraft’s the Old Ones.
Synopsis
In 1930, sea captain Russel Marsh saw the light, and for 93 years his body was not his own. Inhabited by a Great Old One, he committed unspeakable acts in the name of the Esoteric Order of Dagon. Now free, he is in search of a way to go back in time to reverse the horrors wrought upon the world. But the cult has other plans and will stop at nothing to destroy him.
I wasn’t really sure what I was going to think when the film started. The first ten minutes were a little clunky, but it slowly and surely picked up speed. The chemistry between Russel (the always great Robert Miano!) and the fisherman’s son (Benjamin Philip) is terrific, and I loved the cult.
And can we talk about the special effects? They are INCREDIBLE. I can only imagine what they could have accomplished with a higher budget.
But circling back to the acting, the star of the show is Robert Miano, who has been a favorite of mine since Donnie Brasco. He has the experience and presence to easily win over anyone – even if he’s over 100 years old!
This is a film I definitely recommend this one to fans of Lovecraft or anyone who appreciates a well crafted low budget film! You can catch it on Digital on March 19, 2024!
