Interview With Matt Osterman, Director of ‘Hover’ (2018)

A few days ago, we wrote a review of SyFy’s 2018 film, Hover, a terrifying film about mankind’s dependance upon technology. We were fortunate enough to get the inside scoop on the movie from the director himself, Matt Osterman, who was gracious enough to answer some questions for PopHorror.

PopHorror: Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us, Matt! Have you always been a fan of the horror/sci-fi genre?

Matt Osterman: Totally. I grew up on late night reruns of The Twilight Zone, so I often joke I went to the University of Rod Serling.

PopHorror: Wow, I’m a huge fan of The Twilight Zone! How did you get into filmmaking?

Matt Osterman: I grew up in a small town and “filmmaker” wasn’t exactly on the career checklist. It wasn’t until college that I decided I didn’t want a typical career and really focused on screenwriting. From there, I started making pretty bad short films and worked on other projects until I got up the nerve to direct my first feature.

PopHorror: Have you always wanted to direct?

Matt Osterman: After I wrote my first screenplay, I decided that just being a screenwriter was a bit too lonely. I needed a little human interaction every once and awhile. And if I ever wanted my stuff made, I’d have much better odds if I did them myself.

PopHorror: I can see how that would be true. So tell me, where did the idea for Hover come from?

Matt Osterman: From the brilliant mind of Cleopatra Coleman. She was a great collaborator.

PopHorror: Wow, she writes and acts! She’s amazing! What was the hardest part of making it?

Matt Osterman: When you’re working in the low-budget world, everything is hard! We really worked our tails off on this one and my hat is off to the cast and crew for pushing through.

PopHorror: Sounds exciting! What upcoming projects do you have in the works?

Matt Osterman: I have four projects in various stages right now. A couple horror scripts, an underground crime thriller, and a pre-apocalyptic quasi sci-fi dystopian thriller. Cross your fingers for me!

PopHorror: We certainly will!

After seeing how much fun Hover was, we are absolutely looking forward to seeing what projects this director has coming up in the future!
