Darren Lynn Bousman’s ‘The Cello’ Makes Horror History

The new horror movie The Cello, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II), has just made history as the first Arabic international horror movie. The film stars Jeremy Irons (Dead Ringers), Tobin Bell (Saw), and Samer Ismail (The Worthy).

The screenplay was written by Turki Alalshikh, based on his novel. When interviewed he notes:

“I’m honored and proud to see my novel, The Cello, brought to life in cinema and an Arabic film to be seen across so many movie theaters in the United States. I have a passion to entertain, and I am thrilled to help make more history for Arabic arts and entertainment with The Cello, as we continue to strive to showcase the great work that is taking place in the region to a global audience.”

Synopsis:

Like many musicians, accomplished Saudi cellist Nasser (Samer Ismail) has aspirations for greatness, though he feels like he’s held back by the old, dilapidated instrument he’s forced to play. When Nasser is offered the chance to take possession of a gorgeous red cello by a mysterious shop owner (Tobin Bell), he finds new inspiration both for his playing and for his composing. What Nasser doesn’t realize is that this cello has a nefarious past. As he prepares for an important audition with a prominent philharmonic, that past shows itself in the form of an ancient conductor (Jeremy Irons) and the suffering and death of those close to him. Nasser must now decide if achieving his dreams is worth the horror that comes with playing such a perfect instrument.
