‘Her Last Ballet’ (2017) Short Film Review

Short films are not necessarily easy to pull off. The filmmaker has to give the audience a compelling story in a short span of time. I recently saw the horror short Her Last Ballet. The film is four minutes total and tells a creepy story of a gift left on the doorstep of a ballet dancer.

About six months ago, the internet was teased with images of the film but now it has been released on “Carrie Makes it Scary” YouTube channel. The film was written and directed by Carrie Lees. The film revolves around a ballet dancer who receives a creepy music box on her doorstep.

Lees had this to say about the film:

“I’ve had the creepy music box concept for a while, but it changed many times. About five months after finalizing the script I’d fully gathered the cast and crew and we shot it in two days. About six months later I’d decided it was time I stopped making tweaks to the editing.”

The film features a ballet dancer played by Monica Martinez who also plays the creepy ballerina at the end of the short. I felt like the film built the tension nicely as the music box played each time. It creepily lead us into the great unknown as the ballet dancer took the hand of the creepy music box ballerina. The creep factor was built up nicely by Brian Lees’ camerawork. Lees was the co-producer and cinematographer.

Lees is planning another horror short to release on her YouTube channel “Carrie Makes it Scary.” She had this to say about her next horror short:

“It’s already written and most of the crew are in place. Filming is set for January 6th.”

Final Thoughts on Her Last Ballet:

Lees also stated that her new horror short would be “how a blind date can go fatally wrong.” You can watch Her Last Ballet below on the “Carrie Makes it Scary” YouTube Channel. What did you think of the horror short? Let us know in the comments below.
