The 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival is packed full of talent and superb films. One of the films that stuck out to me right away was The Deeper You Dig. There’s just something about that name that resonated with me; plus the poster sent chills down my spine. Would the film itself deliver the same feelings? Find out down below.
This dark horror drama was co-directed and co-written by John Adams and Toby Poser. They also star in the film along with Zelda Adams.
Synopsis for The Deeper You Dig
In the aftermath of a roadside accident, the line between the living and the dead collapses for a mother, a daughter and a stranger.
This film is incredibly dark and disturbing. I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced anything like it before and I definitely didn’t expect it to affect me the way it did. It’s a powerful story that stands out because of its strong performances and chillingly beautiful imagery.
Not only did John Adams and Toby Poser write a powerful and disturbing script together, they stole the show with their emotionally driven performances. Toby’s performance as Ivy, a distraught mother longing to find her daughter, is riveting and will shake you to your core. You can feel her pain, her loss, her eagerness to find her and find out what has happened to her. She will do ANYTHING to find her daughter again. Meanwhile, John kills it as the antagonist who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and constantly makes the wrong decisions. Although Zelda Adams doesn’t appear in the film a lot, whenever she’s on screen, she captures the audience’s attention and delivers chills with her eerie and heartfelt performance.
The dark imagery and cinematography is beautiful and is what made me fall in love with the film. So many wonderful shots and scenes will stick with the viewer long after the film is over. The images themselves could tell the story alone without captions and that, to me, is is pretty powerful. You can see some examples of this above.
The ending of The Deeper You Dig is probably one of the most twistedly eerie endings I’ve ever encountered. It’s disturbing as fuck and the last scene will stay with me forever. It definitely makes my top 10 list of most disturbingly creepy endings ever. You’ll see why. Let’s just say a Mother’s love knows no bounds…
Final Thoughts
This is such a dark and depressing story that’s also filled with love and hope. Much like life, I suppose. It’s one that I would watch purely for the performances and imagery and I plan on re-watching as soon as I can. The Deeper You Dig is undoubtedly a film I will own in a physical format as soon it’s attainable. Right now it’s making its way through the festival circuit, so make sure to watch it if you can.
