Director Julius Berg Talks About His New Film, ‘The Owners’

We recently got the opportunity to speak with director Julius Berg, where he dishes on his 2020 horror thriller, The Owners.

Synopsis: A tale of young robbers who get more than they bargained for with the elderly owners of the home they decide to hit.

The film stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones TV series), Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who TV series), Rita Tushingham (Being Julia 2009), Andrew Ellis (Habit 2017), Jake Curran (Wrong Turn 3 2009), and Ian Kenny (Solo: A Star Wars Story 2018).

Maisie Williams in The Owners

PopHorror: I noticed that The Owners is based on a graphic novel. What was the process like converting it into a movie?

Julius Berg: I liked the simple story that the graphic novel provided and how far we could take it. We had a lot of freedom that we could take from the graphic novel with the characters and story, especially with creating a more surprising ending.

PopHorror: That was an excellent ending that definitely surprised me. How was your experience directing Maisie Williams in The Owners?

Julius Berg: It was wonderful to work with Maisie. She enjoyed the story and understood the vision. It was a simple and delightful process. She really is an amazing actress. She has this natural intensity and smartness that I wanted for her character.

PopHorror: Maisie Williams definitely did a great job in this film delivering a character with fight. How did you take the characters of Dr. Huggins (Sylvester McCoy) and Ellen Huggins (Rita Tushington) from being frail senior citizens to strong, twisted villains?

Julius Berg: I wanted versatile characters like Kathy Bates‘ character in Misery (1990). Both actors delivered this with their performances.

PopHorror: I have one final question. What is your favorite scary movie?

Julius Berg: Jaws (1975). Alien (1979). Suspiria (1977 and 2018) both versions.
