Devourment’s ‘Obscene Majesty’ (2019) – Music Review

Essential slam/brutal death technicians, Devourment, have nothing to prove. Their repertoire of brutality is immense, satisfying and vast, from their early material, Molesting The Decapitated, to the whirlwind which is Butcher The Weak. The Dallas, TX outfit have come to make an even more infamous statement with their latest offering, Obscene Majesty.

Currently signed to Relapse Records, Devourment has unleashed a primitive, unapologetic and stripped down sound with Obscene Majesty. Previous albums delivered technically mesmerizing machine gun drumming and song structures, but never encompassed the sheer wall of muddy, swampy and sludgy sound featured here.

Everything is down tuned, sewer dwelling and low, giving it all an uncompromising and dirty sound that you won’t be able to shake off. I keep going back for multiple listens. The material just fucking blisters with sheer low end brutality. One of my favorite songs is Cognitive Sedation Butchery which has some very memorable hooks, merciless speed and a breakdown is incredible with the mid drum tempo.

Get Obscene Majesty right here!

The guttural vocals, nonstop sonic onslaught of riffs and the head plundering percussion just crushes consistently and relentlessly on all levels. Devourment has progressed by keeping the formula consistent, simple, tight and unrelenting. Not many slam/death albums keep me coming back like this release. It’s a unique slab of brutality to be cherished.
