BITS 2017: ‘Crux: Black Sol Empire Part I’ – A Short Film Review

I had an opportunity to watch and review Crux: Black Sol Empire Part I, which premiered at the 2017 Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival this past weekend. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this film. But the film definitely piqued my interest, when it opened with the following Bible quote:

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:12

Read on to find out more about this short film taking place at the crossroads of good and evil. Is it worth a watch?

Synopsis:

It is often said that the devil can be found at the crossroads. It is the proverbial meeting point of good and evil. The bridge between heaven and hell. The battleground that may be inside each individual’s soul. Filmmaker and animator, Plant Head, along with creature designer, Alvaro Buendia, aim to visualize this point of spiritual intersection through the choreography of crucifixion. The onslaught of turbulence, violence and gnashing teeth that follow, is directed at the viewer in a way that is confrontational and abrasive. It pressures one to introspect on the origins of this chaos. To wonder if it’s an event rooted in the backstory of a fantasy or an inner gaze at the darker territories of the human psyche itself?

My thoughts:

This film was a mind-bending journey. During the short amount time of about three minutes, it left me disturbed. Hard to believe that something could do that in three minutes, right? It totally did. There is just so much evil portrayed in this short amount of time. The creature and the mannerisms of the creature are dark and violent. I am not entirely sure what I watched. I watched it again. It seems that even evil struggles with inner demons.

Final Thoughts:

The animation along with the creature itself and the music definitely will leave you disturbed but intrigued to see what will follow. It shows the inner struggles of evil at the crossroads of good and evil. This is Part I. Perhaps there is a Part II? Watch the teaser trailer below. Be sure to check this one out if you have the chance. Check out this and more from Plant Head Media here.
